Whilst scanning a 1939 photo of pilots from The Wellington (General Reconnaissance) Sqadron, taken at Woodbourne between Sept 1939 and March 1940 when that squadron existed, I noticed these distinctive markings on the strut of a Baffin behind them. This is blown up as best as I can get it. They look like the naval semaphore flag markings that sailors use for colours of the day, etc, and as the aircraft were ex-RN FAA I have searched a few sites that list Royal Navy flags but they dont's seem to match up. Has anyone got a clue of their purpose? My guess is they're only about three inches high each, so not meant for other aircraft to see.
