A day or two ago I received a copy of the 2008 DVD and it is on sale now with presales going out first. I had to go to a meeting in Auckland yesterday so took my lap top on the plane and watched it and it is in a word, Brilliant. Great footage and interviews with pilots from yesterday and today. They had cameras in the Vampires, got some air 2 air footage with the WW1 aircraft as well as the footage from the ramp of the C130. It has a great period cover that almost looks like a movie cover and the sound is excellent. A great effort indeed and it only feels like the show was yesterday so well done on getting a first class production out so quickly and it will go down as one of the great airshow DVDs.

I look forward to buying one, sometime soon. Did they include the Thunder Mustang this year?

Yeh...mine turned up in the mail yesterday... Fantastic footage....mixing and a couple of the facts left a little to be desired... They had audio of Doug's MX2 (I think) accompanying Jurgis in his Juka and referred to the MX2 as an MXT...and had Yoshi flying the Yak50 when in fact he was in the Su29.
But overall a good record of the show...and who knew we had another Astronaut there???

You better check the catalogue and not rely on my memory however before you make the trip.

Yeah, I checked today and was mistaken, but in a good way, even cheaper than I thought.
What was the pre-sale ordering price?

The footage and compilation was pretty outstanding. A lot less talk from the commentary team this time which benefits the sounds and sights of the aircraft being displayed. From a purest point of view there were a couple of historical errors in Ian Brodies commentary re several aircraft. An example is when he states that the P-40 (Ex-NZ3009) was returned from the islands during the war. My research of this particular aircraft for Ray Hanna shows that it never left NZ during the war and was only used for training. Also if I heard correctly he said that the Hurricane joined the RAF in Jul 1940 and fought in France. A bit strange as the French capitulated on 25 June 1940!
Apart from that a great DVD

further to my last the Hurricane went to France 1 June 1940, so perhaps it was my poor hearing that hear Ian say July 1940

I don't believe any of the early batch of P-40E's actually went from NZ to the Pacific, did they?

Greatest ever WOW DVD ........ not a chance. Some great filming for sure but aircraft coverage is as usual limited - OK if you're a fighter pilot, but isn't WOW about everyone that participates. In case you hadn't noticed the NZ based aircraft that always flies the furthest to get to Wanaka, carries the most passengers there, puts the most $$$ into the local economy during the show, has been at every WOW since inception, is the biggest privately owned air transport aircraft in the country, has undergone a very expensive change of livery since the last show and fails to rate even a single focused shot.
And for all of the photographers(Pacific Wings Mag excluded) who stood on the ramp of the C130 taking pictures where are they all guys? Any wonder we ask why we bother going at times ..........

That's a shame, the Dakota is a classic and should have been featured. It probably had more take offs and landings throughout the weekend than anything else too apart from maybe the Catalina (if it was anything like 2006) so the camera crews would have had plenty of opportunities to film it.

Below is a photo from the Hercules flight. This photo has had 64,000 hits since being put on the site which is fantastic. One on the shots I took has just been published in Classic Wings and have just written a story for another magazine covering that flight and have submitted several DC-3 shots as well but it depends on what the editor likes to print. Also sent Andrew a few shots after the show as his is the only email contact I have and I offered to send a disc of photos as well but didnt get an address back so it may have got lost in cyber space but if you PM me your address I would be happy to send you one or several discs is you like. What you guys do is great and heaps of us really appreciate what you do and there is no question that the DC3 looked just stunning behind the Hercules. Last year the aircraft came to Omaka and I helped organize the flight during the NAC tour and there were a lot of smiling faces during and after the local flight that was put on for us and its great that you guys do bother.

Hi Gavin, You have some great shots from Wanaka that I have seen in various publications. I have the WOW 08 DVD and think that the quality is not up to the usual standard. The cockpit shots are good and especially the one of the Herc doing the combat approach and landing is so good that I have almost worn out the DVD looking at it again and again. Just an aside on looking at your photo of the Dakota there appears to be an airstrip that can be seen just under and forward of the left engine. Did you notice this as you were flying around or is it actually not an airstrip? If it is then those trees at the end of it would make for some interesting approaches/takeoffs unless it was a oneway strip.
Cheers Barry

Yep I agree, Maybe just my opinion but when I was watching it the credits suddenly rolled on, What? is that all? The filming quality is brilliant but just didnt seem long enough compared to previous editions. Far better than the 2006 DVD anyway. Ian Brodie did a great job with the commentary I believe that airstrip is 1 of those country cowboy farm strips used as an emergency field for the show. Few years ago I saw a Cessna Bird Dog landing/taking off numerous times however those trees are easily avoided with a STOL aircraft, Good luck with other warbirds

FYI, All requests for (or results of) Publicity/media/filming/photography/ liason etc , at any time, can be, and are best sent via one channel (ie: her at the admin office) - then I have a complete record of the same.

Dave
Thunder Mustang did make it onto the WOW video very briefly; which is great to be on such a world class video. I am heading to Reno races in September and it would be great to take the video you made to play to all the Thunder Mustang owners; who meet at Reno annually?
Will owe you big time Dave if you can sort it for me.
Cheers, Simon
