Police search Air New Zealand plane By SALLY FRENCH - Stuff.co.nz | Tuesday, 08 July 2008 An Air New Zealand plane has been grounded at Whakatane Airport while police carry out a search of the aircraft. Air NZ spokesperson Mark Street said police are investigating a suspicious bag which was due to be put on the plane. It is understood the bag was on a luggage trolley ready to be loaded onto the plane when police intercepted and began investigations. Air New Zealand spokesman Mark Street said the bag was on a trolley and had not yet been put on-board the 19-seat aircraft. He could not say what was suspicious about the bag. Newstalk ZB reported that a baggage handler raised the alarm about 10.30am. A police spokesman said the plane's cargo hold had been emptied and officers were examining the bag and working to identify its owner. Mr Street said the flight was destined to take off from Whakatane and land in Auckland. The substance, yellow in colour and dumped in a trail about 80m long, was found in Styx Mill Reserve, north of Christchurch, at 8.30am, The Press reported. The army was been called in to try and identify the substance which had police and firefighters puzzled.
