A worldwide shortage of pilots, aircraft engineers and air traffic controllers led to Taupo hosting the first New Zealand Aviation Careers Expo yesterday.
Before the expo was more than four hours old, it was being hailed a huge success by organisers.
Several hundred people, including students from high schools from Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Hauraki, had visited the expo at the Classic Flyers Museum at Mount Maunganui before midday yesterday to learn about available aviation careers.
The combined project by the Air Industry Association (AIA) and the Aviation Tourism Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO) was aimed at attracting more people into aviation careers.
The expo ran with the AIA's conference at the museum and is expected to become an annual event. Local co-ordinators, Phill Hooker and Laurence Barnett from Bay Flight
International said most of those looking were young people keen to become pilots.
Having the RNZAF, aero clubs, flight centres, Air New Zealand, the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, and other training organisations there helped the students make a decision on their career direction, Mr Barnett said.
"There are lots who want to be pilots. The only difficulties they face are that training opportunities are capped by the Government, much the same as with doctors and dentists.
"We have been lobbying the Government to loosen up the criteria _ maybe one day it will change.
"Meanwhile, we have to be selective," Mr Barnett said.
He pointed out that while training could be expensive, those who graduated after two years began earning immediately.
