Below are a few Air 2 Air photos of the Klemm pair that came to New Zealand. Special thanks to Ryan for sorting the flight out and flying the camera ship so well. Two very rare aircraft and a great opportunity. More at this link: capphotography.fotopic.net/c1550202.html

Fantastic shots Gavin! Where are these two aircraft based? Were they visiting for Wanaka only? The backdrop looks more like Canterbury.

Good spotting Dave.
South Canterbury to be precise.......Rangitata.
In the last shot, just above the prop of 74, you will see 4 poplar trees by the road. Directly above that is a small brown paddock, now perpindicular to that (and the road) is a long green paddock with lots of trees at the other end and a few buildings dotted around.............................................Rangitata Island home of the Brodie's.
Both aircraft are from Sweden and are enjoyed a lot by the owners. 78 is owned by Hawkeye, a hell of a guy, who wont go anywhere without his co-pilot Benny. They have flown that particular aircraft all over the US, most of NZ, just about all of Europe including parts of the Soviet states. Great characters and great people.
Interesting story on that particular Klemm (I think this is how the story goes), it was the exact machine flown by Hawkeye's father during the Second World War. He has a beautiful wartime photograph of the aircraft (78) in a line-up of Klemm's and guess which one is sitting beside it.......74, kind of ironic I thought.

Thanks Ryan. I have wondered before what Rangitata Island looked like.
So have the Klemms left NZ again now?

If you would like to see them in action or hear about the Klemms in Swedish service see the Warbirds Over Wanaka 2002 DVD and there is a short article on the DVD.

Rangitata has some great scenery alright, nice place to visit. Hawkeye showed me that photo as well, almost unbelieveable to see the two parked in that line up during WW2. Dave, Here is a photo of the airfield taken from the Tiger following the flight with the Klemms. This is the Tiger owned by Russell Brodie and we took these photos a few hours later, a very nice example and I was thrilled to fly in it with Ryan. This is the camera ship we used for the Tiger photos. Russell flew this and showed me just how capable these aircraft are. We had a great time and I will be heading back there another day in order to take a few more photos. The aeroplanes are great but the best thing for me is to meet the people behind the aeroplanes and have some fun.

Just wracking my brain, would the Klemms be the only genuine German Warbirds to have flown in NZ?,being most of the others I can think of have been hybrids of Spanish or French origin?.

Provided the Klemms were built in Germany, I'd say yes. The BF-108 is a French Nord 1002, and the Bf-109 was Czech/Spanish.

Ah just remembered glider ZK-GAE is a genuine German warbird. The Klemms would be the first powered German Warbirds.Appears they were leased to the Swedish Airforce by Germany.

Ryan, thanks for the directions to Rangitata Island strip. I fly in and out of Timaru all the time and have never yet seen the field. Often our eyes and ears are always ahead looking for those in the Timaru circuit but with Rangitata on the MBZ freq, we hear quite a bit from that direction. I recognise the big kink in the road which means I have been looking in the right direction. I go into the 'Ru next monday so will keep an eye out for it now that I know where to look.
