We know that the NZ Widgeons were imported as Ranger-powered aircraft, and converted by TEAL to run Continental engines with variable props. Apparently there were approved conversion packages available, but there is no record of which of these packages was implemented here. I have an enquiry from an overseas historian who is trying to sort this out. He writes: "I have the baseline aeroplane and Lycoming conversions done and turned in. But when it came time for the Continental conversions I realized I didn't have enough info. I grew up in McDermott conversions but I don't know all the background involved in them, I'm still searching. I have a source for info on the Franklin conversions when I get to them, but the TEAL conversions are a bit of a mystery. I know that when Fred Ladd came to the States he flew a number of conversions and I think he took the best of the Continental conversion ideas back with him. He took the engines, augmentor tubes, props, cowling design and nosebowls, from the McDermott conversion, and the upper aft nacelle idea from the Franklin conversion. At least that's what it looks like. If you can run any of that down I'd be most appreciative." Anyone have knowlege of this engineering exercise?
