So from the sounds of things, magazines, forum groups etc, our new NH-90's will not be in NZ skies till the new decade and maybe not till 2011. Their first few years getting plenty of airtime in German skies.
Also, has anyone heard of any code names any users are going to call them.

Seriously, though, I note that the US has in recent times taken to giving illustrious warplane names of yesteryear to its newer generation of military and naval aircraft. Corsair II, Lightning II, A-10 Thunderbolt, Texan II.
I think the RNZAF should reach back into its history for a name for the new helicopter.
My choice would be " Kittyhawk II."

How about the Kakapo?
And no, I don't mean because the RNZAF is flightless, defenceless and all but extinct.
I also think it would be nice to actually name each individual aircraft with a nickname like Air New Zealand does, but name them after famous memebrs of No. 3 Squadron, reflecting it's amazing history. Such as 'George Gudsell', 'Ray Archibald', 'Henry 'Johnny' Walker' and 'Ron McKechnie' etc.
Or alternately they could be named after the regions No. 3 Squadron has operated in, such as 'Mount Cook', 'Guadalcanal', 'Scott Base', 'Timor Leste', 'Espiritu Santo' etc.

It definitely needs a name - in other cases where an aircraft has only a number designation, the media uses the manufacturers name e.g Airforce (sic) Boeings. When the manufacturer has a name like "NATO Helicopter Industries" that gets pretty awkward!

The RNZAF officially dubbed the Aermacchi MB339CB when they purchased it as the Macchi, because no other country had yet given it a name. I remember when it came out in orders that the name was Macchi it stated that partly it was a reflection of the history of combats New Zealanders had fought with their Italian foes from the Macchi company in WWII. I reckon that was a great touch and something similar could be found.
If a native bird is not suitable there is always Ray's option of a Mk II of an earlier aircraft. No. 3 Squadron operated the Baffin, Vildebeest, Vincent, Hudson, Ventura and Mustang before the Helicopter era.
How about the Vildebeest II?

Dave, They are gone. Wonder what will happen to them. Yes you are correct I was referring - in my pithy (no I don't have a lisp) way - to the RAN NH-90s. I guess we will see eh. ARPT was the actual name of the Wessex in service. Until upgrades they used to flop out of the sky regularly. Thank goodness for the twin engine helos of today. ;D

Thinking about it, unlike the RAN saga with their Seasprites - or several of the RNZN's ships - I can't think of any RNZAF fleet purchases where they have turned out to be totally unsuited for the role or simply useless. I know the first two years of Macchi operations seemed like that but what do you expect when you order aircraft with an engine they've never had fitted before, and the Aermacchi staff and RNZAF eventually sorted that and they became valuable aircraft for the service.
