Does the RAAF fly their Hercules or any other types down to Antarctica?
If so, where do they fly from and to? Australia has a massive amount of territory in Antarctica so I assume they have scientific bases down there that need servicing by air?

Casey is their base. They use a Airbus A319 in a business class configuration, about 68 seats i think. The actual runway is a wee bit of a distance from the main camp from memory. Not sure if they have ever put a herk onto any of the runways at MacMurdo though

Thanks. I would have thought a low-wing jet like the Airbus A319 might be a bit dangerous to operate off ice but obviously not.

Reverse thrust is a wonderful thing.

Moderator Dave and Mr Beagle, the build-up story and pics of the inaugural Airbus ops at ANARE Casey are in this two-page thread - rnzaf.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=Aussie&action=display&thread=3708FlyNavy alluded to this further up, but, in his infinite birdiebrainness, forget to post the link. Onya, FlugKeirgmarine! FYI Mr Beagle, ANARE's facilities down there are 'stations' and not 'bases.' That's yankspeak.

YeahButNoButYeahButNO! I'm fed up with searching this forum for stuff and end up with nothing. Search is broken. Scrolling through endless pages of CookieCrumbs is not for the faint hearted - so I gave up. OK! ;D At least I remembered the penguins.
