Hi,
Just looking at your photos posted under the walkaround topic, Dave... does anyone know when abouts the Huey's cockpits were painted black (if I'm not mistaken)- weren't they originally grey?
Should my model (which will be finished in the overall green colour circa 2000) have a black cockpit or grey, please anyone? Any ideas how far back the black is carried because the rear area looks like it's still grey.
Thanks and cheers, Ian

I wondered that myself when i discovered they's changed from grey to black. The black looks better in my opinion and will last longer. I haven't a clue what date they changed though.

I would say that the cockpits were painted black as soon as they started using night vision goggles.

In the mid 90's we were painting the cockpit black. The cargo compartment is Matt Dark Gull Grey and the change line is at the aft corner of the main cockpit frame just aft of the pilots. You can see the change point in this pic www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/pages/mm00iq8.html

No problem for my part Ian, it's a pleasure to help and I'm sure the photos will help other modellers in the future too.

Just a note, the prototype Iroquois to receive NVG equipment was NZ3812, and during its testing phases in Feb 1992 it still had grey interiors so it is post this date.

The black is definitely for the use of NVG equipment. The rescue helicopter here was painted black inside only in the last year.

For the record there's a photo in the November 1993 issue of NZ Wings accompanying an article by our own Paul Harrison which shows Flt Lt Craig Withers and P/O Mike Sterrit (who was a very good mate of mine at Wigram during his training days as he too was born in Cambridge) flying at 1993's Exercise Blackbird and it shows the cockpit frames still being grey then.
