Senator Barack Hussein Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States of America.
Very good outcome in my opinion. Well done Barack.

I feel sorry for the guy - just look at the mess he's been handed, which unfortunately, I think a lot of people are expecting him to have it all sorted out by mid-next week.

I admire the USA for putting aside their past and voting in a Black President - unfortunately I fear this term will end the same way JFKs did.

Yes indeed, not the greatest time to be taking over. Plus with so many disappointed red-necks (sorry, as Palin says, "real Americans") out there I hope to goodness Barack's security will be well taken care of.
Bush does not finish being President till the 21st of January 2009, our time, but I hope that the USA can now move on from the awful hole that the evil Bush administration has dug the country into and they can begin to patch up international relations and I'm sure Obama will soon earn back some of the respect that Bush has lost their country.

An historic day, and one which may be extremely significant in years to come. Martin Luther King and those who went before would be proud. There are still tough times to come and big issues to deal with, but America has signalled that it wants to change. well done USA .

A decisive win for Barrack and change from the people of America. Well done and I have just been watching his speech on Prime, an inspiration to all. The road will be hard but this man will be a good leader and inspiring not only to America but all the world.

Yes, I agree Colin, his speech earlier on Prime was superb. I have to admit McCain's speech where he conceded defeat was also good, but I have never found him very convincing. Obama is a really good public speaker and he is quite inspirational. it's a pity none of our politicians have such forthright charisma.
As for the former navy pilot McCain, I got sick of hearing what a great war hero he was - I mean that was 40 years ago and he spent five years in a cage. You can hardly say that qulifies you for running the world's richest nation. Still, he'd have been marginally better than the current former Texas Air National Guard pilot.

30sqnatc: "Much bettter choice than having a former Navy pilot as pres" Beware the HUN in the sun. ;D & C67: As for being shot down in flames twice! Are you referring to McCain being denied the Presidency by GW in 2000 and again in 2008? & Dave: "evil Bush administration"? that is a bit much! But agree with all the time for change has come and the leader is there to do it (given the chance).
I guess we await developments.

McCain was graceful in defeat and Obama was convincingly inspirational to his supporters. Noone should envy Obama for inheriting George's mess though. It's like a kid getting a previous kid's desk which has been graffitied and then being told to clean it.

A bit premature probably to remark negatively, Obama is not even the President until January 2009. Saw him give first press conference yesterday on TV where it was unremarkable (not President) but he remarked that his girls would probably "get a mutt like me" for the White House dog. The press corps gasped and laughed. Bloody amazing I reckon.
Of course US Presidents will always make decisions that some others don't like - that is their job - to make decisions. Nothing worse than politicians NOT making decisions that only make matters much worse. We hope President Obama makes good decisions that benefit us all, including NZeders.
