Hi all.... Um this just appeared at NZFF, posted by "GlennAV8R":
"Hot off the press, the Spitfire has crash landed at Masterton just now, occupants all okay but aircraft leaking fuel."
That was posted at 1535. Anyone know anything? I hope like hell he's got it wrong somehow......seeing Doug/Keith fly the Spit was gonna be a highlight of Wings Over Wairarapa for sure!

I'm hoping this is just some kind off sick joke by a NZFF member, and not actually true.

It's definitely true. One of the other locomotive engineers based at Masterton is a volunteer fireman and he got called out to cover emergency calls at Masterton Fire Station while the regular professional fire crews were attending the incident at Hood Aerodrome. He phoned me up to tell me about it immediately after getting the call-out, but I was up town at the time and nowhere near a computer terminal.

Did the aircraft catch fire? Is it destroyed? Any news on the condition?
Who was flying? The news said the pilot was ok, thank goodness.

I can hear the distinctive sound of a P&W R-2800 at the moment, so I guess someone is flying the FG-1D Corsair.
Earlier, I could hear the distinctive sound of an Allison V-1720.

Form Radio New Zealand www.radionz.co.nz/news/stories/2009/01/15/1245982daca8Updated at 5:37pm on 15 January 2009 A Spitfire war-plane due to take part in the Wings Over Wairarapa air show this weekend has crashed. The plane had a wheels-up landing at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton Thursday afternoon. Murray Dunbar from the Wellington Fire Communications Centre says the pilot wasn't injured and was able to get out of the plane and walk away. The Spitfire MkIX and a P51 Mustang were to make a historic flypast over Wellington on Friday. Organisers say the flypast will still take place, but not with the original planes.

How unlucky can someone be? I really feel for Doug with all the problems he's had with this Spitfire. I hope that it isn't too badly damaged, and that it is repairable.

Stupid narrow landing gear Glad to hear Doug's okay, but seriously miffed at having to wait even longer to see that beautiful shape in Kiwi skies again. I'd hate to see her sold overseas....

I think quite a few pilots over the years would agree wholeheartedly with that statement!
Wide track rules - like on Corsairs! ;D

Corsairs used to have major troubles with landing too Craig. Dad reckoned he lost count of how many he saw tip onto their nose at Ardmore, and overshoot through the fence into Grandad's paddocks.

I just saw the 3 News article. It's very sad to see, but it does look better than I expected. My heart goes out to Doug Brooker and his team who have had such bad luck.
Seeing a Spitfire on the back of a truck, Brendon's one, a few days ago was a real novelty. Who'd have thought we'd see the same sight again in less than a week, in much less fortunate circumstances.

Dave, I refuse to let you sully the reputation of the Corsair - they are perfect in every way! ;D .......They also had a nasty habit of going cross country if a pilot let a swing develop during takeoff or landing.

Just happened to go to the Herald website and saw the headline along the side "Spitfire crashes at Masterton" or something along those lines - great way to give a man a heart attack! Glad to hear that Doug is ok and the damage certainly looks repairable, but whether it will be economically viable for it to be kept here and rebuilt I guess is another matter.
