The first commercial A380 flight in to Auckland, New Zealand was today by Emirates. It will come here three times a week till more aircraft become available. Monday, Thursday and Saturday. On the other days a 777-200LR will be on in the mean time. Cheers

Great photo there Colin!
I guess this is the reason why Air New Zealand is now cutting all its services across the Tasman from airports other than Auckland, so they can try to compete with these monster aircraft. I saw a billboard for the Waikato Times tonight stating "Call to Boycott Air NZ" - I thought how can we? There's nothing left to boycott, they're already boycotting their passengers.

Haha good call Dave. I'm tempted to fly Emirates on my next trip to the land of Oz just to see the inside of a A380.

Those pics had me scurrying to the Emirates site to look up a return airfare to Sydney for the sheer hell of it. Sense prevailed

Great photos there, Colin - but not even you can make an ugly aircraft look pretty! ;D Give me a B777 any day.

Yeah, but they have to cater to today's obese children with obese aeroplanes Craig.
I think it looks quite stately.

Air NZ need to be concerned by this arrival - 1500 extra seats per week Auckland - Sydney according to one report. I'm sure things like showers and bars are not too important on the Tasman run, however the "new plane" factor and the extra space would certainly attract extra passengers. Air NZ will try and compete with frequency over capacity, but its a market already hotly contested. Thats whay I am dumbfounded at ANZs withdrawl from uncontested regional routes. With publicity and the completion of Hamiltons Upgrade, I'm sure they would have done OK. If i must fly out of Auckland, Big Bird would be my choice.

20 years ago we saw the B747 rule the skies on long range routes, then with ETOPS arrival and aircraft like the B777 and A330, a lot of those thinner routes went to the slightly smaller twin for economical reasons. With the arrival of the A380 and an economic down turn, will see more of these bigger aircraft which are supposidly even more economical then a twin or will we lag behind again. We I mean being Air New Zealand.

Very nice photos Colin. Might have to get up your way to have a look at this beast seeing it is making regular trips now.

That's quite an impressive pile of goodies there! Better than the usual toothbrush and hand towel!

We I mean being Air New Zealand. Quite right. If you are a New Zealand taxpayer, you are a involuntary press-ganged powerless and probably unwilling shareholder. Nonetheless, superb photos there Colin! Thanks.

I thought the forum leader might have been given a perk trip by powers above and would be reporting back with full trip report and photos.

Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 look way better and are still the best two commercial jets operating in the world today.

Thanks for the comments and for me the A380 has a certain charm(European) of its own, not the prettiest but a functional look ushering in a new era in aviation with lots of room for passengers to move about in flight. Having said that will the airlines allow the passengers more room? Lets face it these aircraft have a huge cargo carrying capacity which in many cases would pay for the flight so will the airlines allow more room for Joe Average in economy? A couple of shots of ANZ 747 ZK-NBW taking off in to the sun just before the A380 left as a comparison. Still has that classic airliner look that all others are judged by? Cheers

Colin, I still love the look of the 747, and your pictures capture that "look" perfectly.
I think the thing I dislike about the A380 looks is the cockpit location looks far too low down the nose - but then, I am a fussy bugger! ;D
