I was watching TV3 News tonight and it showed some very old cars in Cromwell. What made me really sit up and take notice was I swear I saw the rear fuselage and tail of a Canberra!! It looked to be either white or maybe silver and posed on poles of some sort. And yes I tried googling it! And yes I was drinking but it was my first glass of wine! Anyone? ;D

Hey, that's one of the Harewood Deep Freeze penguin rubbish bins under that Canberra, cool.
I reckon the Canberra is a disgrace, I'm unsure why the airport owners allow such an eye sore sitting so prominently like that. It's needs some paint, and to be undercover.

The Canberra A84-207 in 2002, not in the best of condition even then:

When I first visited the museum at Wanaka in early 1998 it must have recently arrived, as it was sitting on the ground near the gate, on its tail with its nose in the air. Looked in about the same state it does in the '02 picture from memory.

Just trying to work out from the pictures, is the canopy painted over, or covered with some sort of material?

Just trying to work out from the pictures, is the canopy painted over, or covered with some sort of material? My impression at the time I saw it was that the canopy had become opaque. It didn't appear to have been covered or painted, and the nose glazing was also a bit hazy, if I recall correctly.

adf.serials says that this Canberra was shipped to New Zealand as long ago as March 1993, and I don't think it went anywhere else other than Wanaka. This poor old thing first got stuck on a pole in 1973, so it's no wonder the canopy and paintwork are so poor. It's about as bad as the Dakota at Mystery Creek, if not worse. See some 1971 shots of it looking healthy here: www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=A84-207&distinct_entry=true

The museum seem to be making a habit of parking stuff up and neglecting it, bit of a shame, but they have built some sheds of late to house things, but even the hudson under cover is just as it was pushed in.

Lodestar, not a Hudson (thankfully, Hudsons are far, far too rare to be left outdoors rotting away - though some museums still do that unfortunately)
