About the only thing that changed between that photo and my time there in 74/75 (besides the lack of aircraft) is that they built the swimming pool and the Airman's Carpark. Other than that exactly the same.

I thought the same thing about my time in 1990-91, the carpark had been built and 1TTS. The pool is there, beside the tennis courts. Just no fence and trees around it.
The base now still looks exactly as it did in 1991 when I left, except one of the H-blocks was moved to Whenuapai, the chapel has been shifted and they've removed the library and canteen building. Sadly it's probably all going to be flattened this year thanks to Labour's progressive ideas...

Sadly it's probably all going to be flattened this year thanks to Labour's progressive ideas... So they won't be using the same roads or keeping some of the better and bigger MQ's. I would like to buy the Sgt's mess and turn it into a proper house. maybe keep 1/2 the main bar area as the bar.

Most of the hangars are to remain, and the Sunderland lounge, and the homes are all to stay (and roads I think), but a lot of the workshops and barracks will go, and the wet apron will be redeveloped with a waterfront culture of latte drinking people. The HQ builidng is to become a museum in the current proposal. And two new schools will be built, and shops and houses all over the airfield.

I grew up at Beach Haven and in the late 40's and perhaps early 50's the kids a few years older than me used to go over to Hobby and return with all sorts from the Cats. By that time the aircraft were a bit of a mess as I remember some may have been upside down. I wonder what happened to the stuff they took?
The 5 and 6 Sqdn Cats warmed up by going round in circles between the Beach Haven wharf and Hobby. As soon as I heard the engine noise I sprinted down to the wharf to watch them. Great days.
One day I was swimming in Hellyers Creek and two 6 Sqdn boats circled round, dropped their floats and I suddenly realised they were going to land in the creek. Man, I broke a few records swimming back to the beach. It was the only time I remember them landing there. Fun!
