Thought this would be the best place to start my quest for information on the subject- at the moment I'm a student pilot, don't even have my PPL yet, but will eventually be rated on the C172s out of Ardmore.
I've always had a weird fondness for the simple looking ole Tiger Moths, and have played around with them lots in flight sim, however, now I am progressing things along in the 'real world'- I wonder if there are any ways I could seriously go about this?
This is all just for inquireys sake at the moment, but would any other pilots here be able to give me a heads up on whats available, training/leasing wise in the Auckland area?
Cheers, Andrew

As a newly fledged taildragger pilot myself, I would start on that road by getting some good instruction in a Cub or Citabria - both of which are available at Ardmore and operated by Forum members. This will give good grounding in the intricacies of aircraft that arent "Land-a-matic (tm)" like the 172s that certainly tidied up my general flying skills. get a few hours on such machines before getting into the Tigers - I guess the Tiger Moth Club would be the first point of contact. I would also hint that by the time you get to the Tiger phase there may be even more options available, But I'm not able to say any more at this stage. key thing is - it will take time, but don't give up the dream!

There are a few of us around the place that can assist, its a little easier if you have access to a syndicate share but I have a couple of machines down my way you can fly.

Awesome, thanks for the link there- the black and white inverted image on the TMC page was also on one of the pages of the CPL POF manual that I was studying from today in school! And yep- my next question was to be whether or not I would need a tailwheel rating, or just training on a dragger type before making the switch. I know it's a whole different experience to tricycle type- and have been up in Andy's Citabria a few times already - guess that would be a good place to rebegin when the time comes. Anyway, cheers for the advice, and I'm sure I will have more questions in the future on the subject. Have a good weekend all

Hi Dragongfly, do you do the flights from Mandeville, I have a tiger flight voucher as a birthday present I must take before winter sets in. Can I log the time for the flight?

Yeah we do our flights from Mandeville and you are most welcome to log the flight. Give us a call sometime and we will fit it in for you, in fact, we are out and about this Sunday and if you're free give me a call.

Andy, nice to see you've caught the taildragger bug! I don't know about the 172, but the Tomahawk certainly felt quite different to fly after we took the Tiger to Taumarunui! It really is an enjoyable challenge.
