I have been trying to find some information on an incident that occurred in the early days of Viscount Operation by NAC probably 1959 to 1960 at Whenuapai a Viscount with passengers landing on I think 12, on roll out the nose wheel and port main collapsed and the aircraft skidded off on to the grass stopping short of the control tower, I think no one was hurt but the aircraft was quite damaged, it was jacked up and towed to number one hangar, security was quite relaxed in those days and I was able to ride my bike over to the hangar after school and have a look, I also followed the progress of it’s repair at Whenuapai. Funny thing is I have never been able to find an accident report or heard any mention of this, did I dream it? Regards John

No, you did not dream it. It actually happened. My recollection of it was that the co-pilot or maybe the captain intended to raise the flaps on roll-out with the intention to kill some of the lift and make the brakes more effective. He pulled the undercarriage up lever by mistake and as the speed had not dropped below the speed needed for the U/C to be completely locked down, the undercarriage retracted.
