Hi to all. And to add to this thread, I now have two colour photos of NZ1037 in it's original RNZAF paint taken at Wanaka by Damon Edwards. There was a lot of colour shift in these two, but the different underside colour is just noticeable. Cheers, Pete M.

Cool trx850. In your photos you can see the white u/c door and wheel cover.

Very good photos to demonstrate the different colour. Did NZ1037 belong to the late Kel Aldridge (of RNZAF Museum fame) at that time?

Hi Dave, there seems to be some confusion on the names that appear on the intakes of all the harvards that were retired and subsequently sold after june 1977. For the final flight of the harvards at wigram in June 1977, the names of each pilot that was flying one of the 18 harvards that flew that day was painted on the intake of the machine he was to fly. Hence the names!! Kel flew NZ1037 on that day Bud Mills was in NZ1089 so had SQN LDR A.A.Mills on the intake etc, etc.
The names were left on the aircraft when they were sold
cheers
Paul

Cheers Paul, I didn't realise they painted the names of the pilots on the cowls for that last hurrah. I have a full list of pilots and aircraft somewhere for that flypast if anyone needs it.

In the Wanaka photos the chap on the aircraft is John Mathewson, owner at the time, he kept the harvard on his home strip at Kokonga in the Maniototo, he also I believe still has a ex aussie winjell there

The FAC Harvard on 14 Sdn (Strikemasters) in the early 70's was all over silver, can't remember the a/c number.

And must have had a repaint as she ended up with the grey undersides as mentioned in the thread.(Or maybe she does have the grey undersides just not too clear in a black and white photo?)

We did an annual servicing on NZ1037 about 2 years ago and it still had a light grey underside on wings and centre section then ( not sure about rear fuse underside). It is a strange colour and very hard to spot the difference from silver unless you are lying underneath taking panels off....The colour doesnt show up in black/white photos and is even very difficult to notice in colour shots.

As mentioned before you can see the wavy demarcation line on the underside of the rear fuselage in the last photo on NZ1056 but NZ1037 doesn't seem to be as clear. But Curtiss has actually seen and touched it so there you go! ;D
