I've had a brief pause from model aircraft for a few months, but I'm now back scheming my next build. At our Forum meet a while back I won a 1/72 Hasegawa BF109E in one of the raffles we held. Having built the RNZAF war -Prize Zero, I'm thinking of building the RNZAF war- prize Messerschmitt. I have only seen very few photos of this aircraft, on display in Wellington (I think) as part of a war bonds drive. It had a bent prop, and was missing cowlings, canopy and many other panels. For a challenge, I thought I might do a mini-diorama of it in this condition, and to that end, I have just purchased a Falcon 109E detail set with all the engine bits etc. I understand this aircraft had the fuselage code "Brown 5" but the few photos I have seen dont provide a lot of clarity (on a mottle finish anyway...) Does anyone have any pics of this machine stashed away in thier collections? As always, I would be very grateful.

Noone probably thought that the most massed produced aeroplane in history would ever be so rare. Sad that it was cut up.

Bruce, over the years Seddon "Snow" Fenn, a well known aviation buff from Wellington, collected together info on the Bf109 which he'd remembered being at the TTS in Nelson or Rongotai when he went through as a wartime trainee. He wrote up several articles, one has appeared in NZ Wings many years ago, but more recently he wrote a good one in the New Zealand Memories magazine which was followed up by several people sending in their own memories and photos in subsequent issues, including a Driver who was on the team that shifted it to Wigram from Nelson. Go to the Uni library as they have the full set, that's where I saw them whislt flicking through a few years back. I'd say this was about 4-6 years ago they were published. Probably the best number of photos I've seen of the machine.

Its coming along in fits and starts but isnt looking too bad at the moment. I have struck a minor issue in terms of finding appropriate light brown code numerals, as they dont come out very well using my normal inkjet printed decal trick, and probably would have problems on APLS too. I've got the airframe painted but need the codes before completing the weathering. The Falcon detail set is superb, with a beautiful DB 601 and nicely detailed cockpit. The way these fit in allows them to be fitted after painting, so they arent in place yet, but test fittings have been done and they fit perfectly. Not sure when I'll get it finished, I've got some bigger projects on the go at the moment taking up my time.

Hi Bruce. I posted this one some time back but can't remember which thread. Anyway, here it is again.

Now then Chaps, The colour demarkation on Shamus's photo seems to be at odds to the colour rendering earlier in the thread. Given the reputation of Classic colours for accuracy of their research was the airframe repainted at some stage?

It looks to me as if the paint has been freshened up by the RNZAF. There is also, in my opinion, a ' repair ' to the trailing edge of the rudder which has altered its profile.

The Me109 was used in a Bonds drive at one point and the paint was probably redone then to make it more presentable to the public.

Dave I think you are right as the black outlines on the bottom of the 5 and the cross below what was the line of the original top colours appear to have been roughly painted over. Additionally the colour on the fuselage sides extends much further under than was normal or even the exception on BoB period Luftwaffe machines.
The rudder does look a bit odd and it will be useful to compare this view with some aircraft in the feild at a similar angle.
My next dilema is how close was the match of the local repaint?

The text accompanying the profile says that, based on the photo. taken in Wellington, the Messer's wing tips were painted white.
I beg to differ. The Emil's wing tips, I my humble opinion, have been removed. The end of the port wing seems to be too wide and straight to be the wing tip fairing, and is in fact the end rib, I believe.
I suspect that the tip fairings had been souvenired at some stage before the Wgton photo was taken.
Does anyone know of another pic. of this aircraft that will give us a clearer view of the wings ?

Now then Bruce, a mighty fine diorama which I like a lot, especially the War bonds poster. Very topical for this year and a scene I am contemplating modelling also for the UK IPMS Nationals Battle of Britain display this coming November.
