Is that hot start(?) normal for a Friendship? Looks very dramatic, and certainly makes for a great photo.

Mr Tunnicliff looks right at home in the Chang ! Love the angle of the first shot. Who does BTI belong to? That first shot of it is truly stunning Gav, the scenery below is amazing. I love it. Also the shot at rest with the mountains behind, just beautiful. To me, what springs to mind when "bush flying" is said. And very nice to see the Friendship again after so long, again a dynamite shot! Any chance of a (daytime) air-to-air with her? Would love to see that!

Great photos as usual Gavin, but I agree with everyone that the F-27 photo is spectacular. I also really like the golden Skyhawks. And the shot of ZK-BTI over the pond is great, is that Marlbourough? It looks too green.
There's something really Tonka toy looking about ZK-BSH. ;D

I was wondering how come no one had commented on the odd looking bush wheels on BSH , or the mono-wheel Nanchang . Was starting to think it was just me ! :-)

Those big wheels have been discussed in the past when Gavin has photographed that aircraft, and I did make the comment that it looks like a Tonka toy...

Sorry Dave , I meant why no one had commented on the wheels - before your comment ( must have missed the previous discussion ). Like wise with Ryans comment on the Nanchang . I meant , why no one had commented on the single wheel -- till he did . :-)

Oh thank god someone has asked about the mono wheel Nanchang. I thought perhaps it was snapped during a Undercarriage retract/extend cycle or you can use the nose wheel as an airbrake.

Sorry for the lack of reply. Been flat to the board this week. The Nanchang photo was taken during a routine gear down sequence. Never realised just how quick the nose wheel comes down and the mains followed soon after so no funny stuff going on but it did make an odd looking shot. The F-27 was going through a normal engine start with just a bit too much fuel. The aeroplane is fine and just one of those things, the crew never knew I was there. Have never asked about Air 2 Air with the F-27 but perhaps I should ask some time. ZK-BTI is owned by an out of town syndicate and is flying with the MAC at the moment. The photos of it were taken in the Wairau Valley area. We got some very neat photos of the Pacer. It is a real performer now with a larger engine and lots of other mods. Keep an eye out for Av News next month as we are working through a story at the moment. I have got the pilots involved in the writing so it should be a good practical introduction into the flying they are doing. Last time I photographed it was in 2007 and it had just got the tyres seen bellow but as you can see now it has even bigger ones. A new set is available that are 4 inches bigger again.

When I first saw the Pacer in the hangar at Omaka I casually leaned out the door to see if the Freighter still had her main wheels on her!! ;D

I am never totally convinced of the safety of these style of aeroplanes with the broomstick-style boom between the cabin and the tail. They look like the tail could snap off after a good bump or a birstrike in the right place, or simply overstressing it.

Must say though that BSH looks really good these days, all in the eye of the beholder I guess and its flying a lot. I used to spend time cleaning planes when I was a young fella (Like many of us have done) and went for a ride in it when it had a wheel on the front. Keep an eye out for the next Aviation News as there will be a bit in there on the aircraft and operators. Have just added a folder of photos to my website of the aircraft below.
