Hi all, Would anyone here happen to know what the puggarre colours were for the Pioneer Battalion in WWI? I suspect it's the same as the infantry's but I want to make sure it wasn't that of another branch, such as the Engineers.
Cheers

Dave is right that those two colour photos are genuine. To my eye (on my screen at least) the low contrast of the upper surface colours looks like it's Temperate Sea Scheme, like this CC Beaufighter:

Hi all, While looking through the Air Force Museum's photos I had a look at a photo of NZ3148 (the first Gloria Lyons, file PR2686) and when I zoomed in after downloading the high res I noticed something strange about the pilot's helmet... is it just me or has it had parts cut out so the pilot's hair is visible? If so I assume it wasn't common and was for cooling purposes? Cheers, HB

Bumping this thread as I've added two more links to the first post. Under the IL-2 Great Battles section I've added a Spitfire Vb of Colin Gray and a pack of Hurricane IIb's of 486 (NZ) Squadron.

Hi there,
I hope this in the right sub-forum but here goes.
Would anyone here happen to have contact details for any of Fred's children? I'm asking on behalf of my mother as we're distantly related to Fred and she wishes to get in touch with them.
regards,
HB

I believe Jamie Jameson was OC 122 Wing as a Group Captain but wasn't the Wing Commander (flying), a position that was filled by Evan Mackie, who previously was CO of 80sqn after 'Spud' Spurdle. In October '44 while 122 Wing was in Europe the Mustang squadrons were pulled back to the UK to fly long range escort missions and their place was taken by the Tempest squadrons. In the following link is a picture of Jameson and the COs of the the three Tempest squadrons in the winter of 44/45, all Kiwis. www.rafweb.org/Biographies/Jameson.htm

In his auto-bio, Houlton states ML407 was one of the batch of brand new aircraft the squadron received at the end of April '44, so I'd guess it was built with the E wing rather than a conversion?

Fascinating stuff Dave, thanks.
I do think that they are the same aircraft in both photos, small details match up with that distinct and surely unique stain under the cowling being the same (it appears dark in the first pic and light in the second). Maybe it's just me but to my eye the bit of white paint that joins the upper and lower white stripes on the leading edge in the first pic looks like it is rougher than the rest, the edges being rougher and slightly wonky rather than nicely masked so perhaps they were joined up at a later date?
However I don't think it is ET449/NZ3097 as it is not an E but a long-tail K, the rudder is too far back from the tail plane, there's a radio antenna mast (the E didn't have it), the exhaust pipes are of the later flattened (fish-tail?) shape and the cowling lacks the small scallop behind the exhaust.
As an aside I got quite far on colourising the photo but didn't finish it, I really should get my finger out.

Hi all,
While literature for nos. 485 and 486 squadrons is quite plentiful, there seems to be a lot less in regards to the other NZ Article XV squadrons. I'm aware of course of Graham Clayton's books on 488sqn and various bits'n'pieces in the Ventura publications however I'm after more recommendations for books on these squadrons, specifically unit histories but aircrew biographies would be good as well.
Regards,
HB

Indeed it had the later style exhaust stubs in the photos I based the skin on (from Ventura's Classic Warbirds No. 12 book) along with an Aboukir air filter, but unfortunately the sim doesn't have the option to add those details.

Over the years I've made a number of skins for various sims, some of which portray aircraft of NZ pilots which I figured might be of interest to some of the communty. Below is a list of links to these skins, some are individual and some are part of larger skin packs. I'll update this list if/when I make some more Kiwi skins.
