I bet the NZ Army doesn't have any recruits like this one!!! 09 November 2009 Mascot Stan the Ram is enlisted into the ArmyPrivate John 'Stan' McArthur VI, a merino sheep donated by Peter and Linda Hacker of Roselea Merino Stud Muckadilla was enlisted into the Army on November 4th 2009. The enlistment of 'Stan' follows a tradition that dates back to February 18th 1971 with the enlistment of the original Pte John McArthur into 9 RAR. This was the first time that the enlistment has taken place since the unit was removed from the Order of Battle in June 1997 after a major restructuring of Army.

What you have there is a Turkish army ration pack.
Take my word for it, I speak whereof I know.

Looks like better company than Cpl Sandy Melon. Tastier too!
Cpl Sandy Melon earned his fame and a place in Cavalry history at Puckapunyal on a resupply mission where he was tasked with supply of "fresh rations" to near scurvied troopers on rigourous excercise. The unfortunate Corporal fell from the resupply vehicle and onto the gravel road where he split his...... melon. Luckily, quick thinking from the Troop medic saved Melon from certain slow death at the scene via excellent drill and application of field dressing to the area of the wound. After stabilising, Sandy refused casevac saying:
".........".
Cpl S. Melon soldiered through the pain for another 12 days and completed the course and his mission. Unfortunately Cpl Melon succumbed to what seems to have been an infection in the wound when the contents of his cranial cavity emptied all over the medics arm while dressing Melon's wounds, accompanied by a terrible stink. Cpl Melon is listed in Troop records has having Died of Wounds in the field. Cpl Melon was buried in a hastily marked grave with a full 21 blank salute.
Melon is remembered as a very cerebral character whose mind contained a pithiness that was both sweet and refreshing. Cpl Melon was and shall remain sadly missed.
On rememberence day, lest we forget.

Leyland, I am touched by this story of service and self sacrifice. Touched, I say.

I'll have to have a look and see if Cpl Sandy Melon is at all commemorated on the walls of the Hall of Memory at the AWM.... Mateship, coolness under pressure, and self-sacrifice: hallmarks of a true Digger.

And yet I do not understand why it is the Kiwis who cop all the sheep jokes.

Mateship, coolness under pressure, and self-sacrifice: hallmarks of a true Digger. Yep. Lest we ferment.
