I note that a program - of sorts - has been released..... www.mbac.co.nz/"Mercury Bay Shell 2010 Airshow 6th March 2010 11am - 4pm. PROGRAM 11am - 4pm Lear 35A Jet Moth Minor Fox Moth Tiger Moth Chipmunks Auster J5/Cub L4a DH 84 Dragon DH Dove Percival Provost Wing-Walker Fraser Briggs Model Display Citation 501 Jet DHC Beaver Cessna 185 Cresco Jet Ranger - Spraying Bell-47 - Mash colours H500D Squirrell AS350 Westpac Rescue Helicopter BK117 Furio Titan P51 Sukoi/MX2 Citation Departure Catalina DC3 Helicopter/Car Race ME 108 Nanchang Yak 52s - Aeros Trojan T28 Thunder Mustang Avsure Harvards - Aeros P40 Kittyhawk P51D Mustang A37 Dragonfly L39 Albatros Finale: P40/P51/A37/L39 The order, types and times of aircraft may vary. Airshow Commentator: GRAYSON OTTAWAY" Looks like a decent line up and a perfect excuse for a bit of a cross country so weather permitting, my Daughter and I will be heading over in a Robin from North Shore.

Does the phrase "Citation departure" mean what I think it does and that a Citation jet will actually be operating from the strip....? I know the strip is plenty long enough but the high wheel-loading and potential for turbine FOD damage usually keeps the jets away from grass strips, doesn't it? Being a military trainer, perhaps the L-39 is designed to take a bit of the rough, but American biz-jets...? Should be interesting. Definitely worth a look...

Booked a Robin for the day this morning.
Glad I didn't leave the booking too late as there were only two online that day - the rest being away at the RNZAC nationals.

The Citation can operate out of Whitianga quite happily and has done frequently in the past.

$25 entry fee.
The DC-3 is going over from Ardmore. Depart at 0930 sharp. $120 package including airshow tickets. (If we get enough pax, we may do 2 trips...) Contact Jessica or Eugenie on 09 479 1378 or 0274 382 297 or flydc3@paradise.net.nz

who else is going to Whitianga? Dave and I will be arriving via DC3 and I see Stu and Peter are self flying, anyone else? I have to say the DC3 flight is pretty good value - saves driving a lot of winding Coromandel roads! (although I see the Dak is at Hamilton at the moment minus 1 prop - hopefully everything will get put back together on time!)

Com on Bruce! You took off the DC-3 prop to delay departure and get a ride up to AR from HN to save gas for the car.Did you think we'd fall for that one!?

Heh yeah, just casually arrive and say " hey how about fitting this one I happen to have with me..." Cunning plan!

I have slight problem - I am one of the lucky ones who'll be going to Ardmore (with Bruce) and flying across to the airshow in the Dakota, which is awesome.
However I have just realised that this event is the same day as another event I was meant to be attending with friends that evening in Coromandel township. I had arranged this ages ago and only just realised the clash. It's not really a clash and i can do both things, if I can get to Coromandel after the airshow finishes. I can come home the next day with my mate who I was meant to be driving up with.
But does anyone know a good way to get from Whitianga to Coromandel on a Saturday afternoon? I'll bet there are no buses. Is anybody driving back to Auckland/Waikato that way via State Highway 25? Or does anyone want to perhaps make a short hop to Coromandel airport to drop me off before heading on home in your plane?
It's a bit of a dilemma. If I cannot get a way to Coromandel township sorted I'll have to cancel my plans to go there and return home on the Dakota and with Bruce. The airshow is my priority right now but it would be great to do both. Any suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks to the above message I have had a kind offer of a lift to Coromandel after the airshow so all is well again. Thanks Nick!

Betsy (DC-3) is ready to fly back to Ardmore on Friday after week of scheduled maintenance at Hamilton. (Thursday - weather forecast was thunder, lightening, hail...)
March is Air show and Action month...Join us for the flight to Whitianga on March 6th - a local airshow with lots of noise, aviation grunt and provincial pride.
Waikato folks can come to see the DC-3 at Hamilton again on March 20th. Waikato aeroclub. $50 flights...nowhere else in the world will anyone do that... We do it because we are very proud New Zealanders who want to share the DC-3 experience - we KNOW we are among the last in the world to provide this. This DC-3 is one of the best examples of it's kind anywhere. This DC-3 has a NZ air transport license...so we are an airline, and our crew are all passionate , and professionals. Come out and fly with us!

I'll be spending the weekend in Whitianga and really looking forward to the air show. My wife and I were given a weekend at a bach down there as a wedding gift almost a year a go, and this seemed like a good weekend to get down and use it! It wasn't available over Tauranga air show weekend, but this show is looking like having an interesting range of aircraft.

Well the weather looks like it should be good, according to the Metvuw forecast and TV1 news tonight. Fingers crossed. The last time I was going to go to the Whitianga airshow, flying up with Chris (Piperguy) the weather saw to it that it was cancelled.
