what theoretically could the Gov buy if they were forced into new aircraft by 2015? The NFH90 would keep commonality within the Defence force but would it be the right aircraft for the job? and would it fit into the hangars on the ANZAC frigates? One of the other options could be the new Lynx Wildcat from the UK, that looks like a capable machine developed from a proven platform. Of course all this would depend on how much the cost came to!

If I recall correctly the RAN ones were all refurbished ex-USN SH-2F airframes with the new digital avionics and flight controls installed. A real Frankenstein if you ask me.

I'm chafing to see pics of the new Kiwi choppers. Try rubbing a little lanoline or goanna oil on the effected area Mark

NEW CAPABILITY FOR AIR FORCE At 11.00am today the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chief of Air Force will open the new No. 3 Squadron hangar and unveil the A109 Light Utility Helicopter at Air Force Base Ohakea. It was, however, on 28 April that the first A109LUH(NZ) flight occurred in New Zealand when NZ3402 took to the skies at Ohakea to undertake its post rebuild maintenance check flight. At the controls were SQNLDR Chris Moody, FLTLT Cam Harvey and W/O A-J Bailey, all from the Helicopter Transition Unit. While there is still a long way to go to fully develop the A109 capability, the first flight was significant milestone. In due course the A109 will provide an outstanding new military helicopter option for the Government and people of New Zealand. These are exciting times as the RNZAF continues progress toward its goal of introducing new and upgraded fleets across the organisation. This flight and the ongoing introduction into service of the A109 is only possible because of considerable hard work right across the RNZAF, NZDF, Ministry of Defence and Industry partners, both in NZ and overseas.
