Three of us headed south over the Bombay Hills into the misty Waikato for the start of the Balloons over Waikato 2010 launch from Innes Common. Unfortunately even though the mist burnt off the cloud base was too low for flying today. We were all treated to 19 or so inflated and tethered balloons so well done guys considering the weather. Hope it improves as the event progresses. Peacock laid out. Filling it with cold air. Heating the air. Kids love balloons and what better than a giant Peacock? The other featured shapes this year. Cheers from sunny Auckland! ;D

Great photos Colin. It's a pity about the weather. The wind is quite rough here now. I like the peacock and the Jack-in-the Box

A 5.30am start this morning allowed me to arrive at Hamilton Lake just as the balloons were inflating. The weather was clear, with very little wind. First to inflate and release was Cameron A-375 ZK-FAR/3 There were two special shapes on offer, the Mushroom N386UZ and the Jack-in-the-box, registration unknown (anybody?) The other overseas entrants were Thunder & Colt 42A VH-THZ Kavanagh D-77 VH-FTL and Cameron N-90 G-CXCX Two of the NZ entrants were new to me, Kavanagh C-77 ZK-RYZ and Kavanagh D-90 ZK-PEA The light winds were mainly westerly, which saw most of the fleet rapidly disappear over the city towards Cambridge However Thunder & Colt AX7-77 ZK-MJC was a bit more cunning, and after a close encounter with the target area joined late-starter Kavanagh D-90 ZK-WEL in a dip in the lake (A really busy day - early start for the balloons, then Tauranga for the Zero and home for twin-sitting and a visit to the local for the "Alice in Wonderland" movie. I'm off to bed!)

Lovely pics Peter. Jack in the Box reg N149JB cheers Thanks Colin, and for the email Some of those US balloon regos are really small and hidden. Yes a lot of sleep was had by all. At least now they are 11 the twins don't arise with the sparrows. Interesting thought occurred - in past years all those balloons would have been adorned with sponsors advertising. Very little evident now. Signs of the GFC? (Global Financial Collapse).

I love the pictures that include the balloons splashing in the lake. I wish I could have seen that part. I saw the nightglow - beautiful!

I'm a bit late here but I've been editing 22 gigs of photos from the week. I'll add a couple of shots from the week... Our family of 3 were this years "BOW photographers". I also shot time-lapse for 3 of the days. Fog on Wednesday and Sunday makes intersting shooting. As did the wind on Sat night. Our gallery here... www.pbase.com/ascend_photography/bow_2010Timelapse snippets here... Back to work.. Pete
