Watch WWII planes in action this Sunday in Auckland! TVNZ are staging a World War II dogfight re-enactment (Sunday 11 April, from 1pm) in Mission Bay, Auckland in honour of the epic new TV ONE miniseries, The Pacific, produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, the production team behind the award-winning miniseries Band Of Brothers. Watch as a real New Zealand Kittyhawk takes on two Japanese fighter planes and enjoy the spectacle that ensues. The dogfight will be visible from anywhere along Mission Bay beach, so be there early and get ready for some exciting action. The Pacific launches on Monday 12 April at 8.30pm on TV ONE tvnz.co.nz/the-pacific/watch-wwii-planes-in-action-sunday-auckland-3451306

The Zero?
Or maybe just two Harvard-ishis or a couple of Nanchang-sakis?

Maybe the A6M3 out of the war memorial museum? A new type of CGI perhaps - or have Peter Jackson and Weta taken molds off the zero at whilst at Wanaka and built a replica?

The Zero? Or maybe just two Harvard-ishis or a couple of Nanchang-sakis? If one of them isn't the Zero it would be a crying shame. The TVNZ page does have a photo of it, so I'm fairly sure it's the plan. I'm wondering if someone got mixed up and it's the Zero plus 2 P-40s, or Zero and P-40 + Mustang.

When I visited the Zero in Tauranga yesterday, I was told it has a broken tailwheel.

It's like the old CC's ad. "They will not know the difference!". Speaking of which, the Stuff website in its Wanaka coverage referred to the Hornets as 'new', the Spitfire as a "Mark 1X", and "A Jurgis Karyis" flying in formation with the Dakota.

No Zero. It is two Harvards painted with Jap markings. They just went over our house.

Must have been a pretty short display. I only had time to make a cup of tea and they were on their way back to Ardmore.

It was pretty short. Two Havards with meatballs on them and the Kittyhawk from Ardmore.
The Harvards dive bombed a barge just off the beach, there were some fireballs and a bit of flak. The flak, which looked quite nice and set off some car alarms, got one Zero/Kate/Val and the other was seen off by the P40.
The Harvards got pretty low and close to the beach, but the P40 was always a bit distant. I certainly came away slightly disappointed - but that would have been rectified by a couple of low passes by the P40 to finish the display. All over in about 5 minutes by my count. Girlfriend thinks more like 15. Smattering of applause from the crowd, which was quite big, for the P40's victory roll.
The highlight of the display for me were the 10 year old kids on the beach yelling "HERE THEY COME!" and "THEY'RE BOMBING THE SHIPS!!"
