The fact that an enormous amount of people turned up to watch a tiny ten minute display over mission bay, just shows how hungry Aucklanders are for an airshow in this neck of the woods. I overheard a Programme seller at last weekend's Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow ask someone, “Are you from either Auckland or Australia? If so, we love taking your money!” ;D

Awesome. TVNZ seems to have sunk a lot of money into promoting the series.

We watched the event from above, at Bastion Point. The only drawback of this viewpoint was looking into the sun. There was some ground-based activity apparently at the Mission Bay reserve (where the Walsh Bros Flying School was located, all those years ago). The aerial component saw a pass by what looked to be Rob Fry's Sukhoi Su-29 ZK-SUK early in the event, while the Harvards formated out over the Gulf. The Harvards then performed a series of diving passes, simulating a ground attack Ground-based pyrotechnics accompanied this performance The P-40 showed up, and 'shot down' one of the Harvards Which then appeared to 'crash' onto Rangitoto The P-40 then drove off the other Harvard, and then did its victory roll before departing. The Citabria ZK-CIT then did a banner towing exercise advertising the TVOne program. As has been said, the exercise was fairly short. Back out at Ardmore, the aircraft were parked out in the sun Harvard NZ1057/ZK-TVI and NZ1098/ZK-ENJ I'm sure that, as a publicity exercise, it was worth their while.

Here's a Herald article www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10637737Thousands flock to Mission Bay for aerial dogfight 6:00 PM Sunday Apr 11, 2010 A Japanese fighter plane takes part in a re-enactment of a WWII air battle. Photo / NZPAThousands of people flocked to Auckland's Mission Bay today to watch a number of mock explosions in a re-enactment of a World War 2 dogfight. Crowds lined the streets and the beach to watch two Japanese fighter planes take on a New Zealand Kittyhawk. The sky was clear for the many people snapping photographs below. The dogfight was staged to promote TV One's new mini-series The Pacific, which screens tomorrow at 8.30pm. Appropriate authorities had been involved in the planning of the explosions, said TVNZ spokeswoman Megan Richards. The dogfight was organised by the same people who manage the Warbirds over Wanaka air show, she said. - NZPA

Thanks for sharing the photos guys, would like to have seen it but we decided to spend the weekend somewhere relaxing and far nicer than Auckland that may be familiar to a few forum members Sigh, no place like home.... Have to work tonight but have set the my sky thingy to record the show. Looks good from what I've managed to see on the interweb.

I guess when you flew the other direction, Eno got a free advert?
I just watched the first episode. Very good indeed. I am looking forward to next week's. I don't think it had quite the impact as Band of Brothers but then the first episode in that show was slow too and got better from No. 2 onwards. It's neat to see the Battle of Guadalcanal depicted in a way that from all the accounts I've read seems wholly accurate.
