I wonder if anyone has nice coloured home movie footage of the Lancaster running its engines? Logic tells me someone must have filmed it. Perhaps even BCNZ or TVNZ did?

I recall a friend of mine had some, it was put onto a video from an 8mm(?) movie, I must find out if he is still alive and the video still survives.... The only limitation was that there was no sound.

The only limitation was that there was no sound. That would be a great find, I'd be happy to help get any film into a digital format if it does still exist.

Shorty thanks for the photo, any more in the cupboard? And yes while MOTAT "claims " the Lanc it was presented to the people of NZ and MOTAT is the custodian only , although I wonder if they list it in their assets register these days. If anyone has film I have Lancaster engine runs on a digital sound track that could be added.

Dave, your dream is soon to be realised. Just went through my old super 8 movie film and found one of the Lancaster engine run. It seems the starboard inner only turned over but did not start. However the starboard outer and port inner are both running. That is as far as I ran the film so the port outer may also be running. I think the DC3 engine run is on the same film. Will arrange to have it put onto disc and post it on this thread.

I have 9 or 10 super 8 reels. Others have written on them;- Avenger Rotorua. Harvard Morrinsville, TBF Western Springs, Lancaster move, Pearse plane, Magister, Beech AT11. Rapide, AT6, Vampire. P40, Ventura, Muldoon in front of P40. Richard Pearse's sisters. And some of the Monospar at Hastings, and of a Chrislea Super Ace. Also one of a helicopter flight over Meola Rd. in its early days.

Holy heck, that sounds like a treasure trove. I am sure that if you decided to convert them to digital format a lot of people here would be happy to pay for DVD copies, like we did with the Barrie Reid films. Any thoughts?

Dave, first have to find a company that does the conversion properly on a frame by frame machine and not by projecting the film on a screen and filming it with a dvd camera which a lot do. This latter method produces inferior quality and not what I want.

Orongaronga Stream, Wainuiomata. Sgt Thomas Marchant, 16 squadron, 1-5-43 I took a trip up to the wreck site way back in the late '60's. The scar was visible from Wellington Road (and still is I believe).
The rudder was in a property at the end of Sunny Grove and was visible as we started the walk up the stream.
The engine had been carried (rolled) down and was partially buried by the stream.
The armour plate had also been carried down but abandoned and that was also by the stream.
The experts in our team found what they wanted (fibrelock nuts from the tail-feathers?). I scooped up some small items of wreckage but the best was a fabric piece still in its Sky Blue. I lost it a couple of years ago dammit! Oh and we also recovered a bright green tipped armour-piercing .5 round that we handed into the police.
I really would like to visit the site again.

As the Lancaster was presented to the people of New Zealand and Motat became the curator by dint of being the only aviation museum in existance at that time (albeit in an embryonic stage) and is a non governmental arganisation surely this was a interim arrangement? As the Government represents the people of New Zealand and now has an aircraft museum as part of one of it's departments (i.e. the Air Force) why cannot the government have our Lancaster transferred to Wigram to become part of a public owned collection instead of remaining with a non government entity?
Food for thought?

I'm a Hutt Valley local, so if you can give me some precise pointers I can go have a look and see if there is anything still visible from the road. I don't expect there would be anything remaining of the aircraft at the site itself these days. *Edit. Also curious about Orongorongo 'Stream'. There is the Orongorongo River, but that is some distance away (in the next valley at least). Orongorongo Stream may be a no-longer used reference for that river; the stream running past Sunny Grove these days is called Skerrets Creek, which feeds into the nearby Wainuiomata River.

Shorty, MOTAT is now a Government funded national museum too, isn't it? The Auckland Council and Government signed a deal to fund it a few yars back - hence all the improvements there. And hence the reason they get a Skyhawk in the first batch.
