Te Karere just showed a piece on NZ soldiers in Bmayan Provence, Afghanistan, and two of the Maori soldiers they were interviewing had full beards.
Would they have been Army? Or Navy? They looked to be an army unit. Has some special dispensation been made to allow our Army to grow beards? Seems a bit odd.
My uncle reckons that when he was in the front lines of Italy in WWII, it didn't matter if you were covered in muck and filth, and exhausted from battle and all that, the Sgt major would still come round daily and bollock you if you had not shaved. he reckoned it was really good because he always felt better after a shave. It helped morale.

Because of the cultural significance of beards in Afghanistan, all three services generally grow them when in theatre. Not sure the exact rules, it might be more at the patrol bases than at the main camp, but they are failry common.
