Man dies in Tauranga microlight crash Updated 10:56 AM Monday Sep 27, 2010 A 56-year-old man has died after a microlight crash at Tauranga Airport this morning.
Western Bay of Plenty police acting area commander Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair said the microlight crashed on a grass strip between two runways at the airport.
Mt Maunganui Fire Service station officer Lindsay Nicol said he had seen the microlight doing laps of the airport earlier this morning.
It crashed about 8.40am and appeared to have sustained a major impact, he said.
The man was trapped in the wreckage and emergency services had to lift the aircraft off him to get him out.
Mr Nicol understood three people had seen the crash and were being spoken to by police.
Tauranga Airport is still open and operational. Emergency services are at the scene.
Mr Wright-St Clair said the Civil Aviation Authority had been notified and would investigate the circumstances of the crash.
