This is a mini-series I watched when it came out and had always wanted to see again. The Heroes is the true story of Australian and New Zealand Z Force commando troops who used an old captured fishing boat to getup close to occupied Singapore and launch a canoe-borne attack in the harbour. It is a brilliant story and as with most Australian war films, very good indeed. Plus there's a Harvard which is likely to be ex-RNZAF dressed up as a Zero which makes several appearances, plus a Mitsubishi Pete floatplane too!
I'm planning to watch Heroe's II: The Return next.

I have been watching the istallments of these two mini-series for the past several days when I get the time. Wow, they're every bit as good as I remember. Really well made, well written, well acted true history of real heroes. Why don't they make TV like this any more?
I think I liked the first one best as the second one has a very sad ending and overtones. I also think Jason Donovan was excellent in the role of Happy in the first one and while the chap who played Happy in Heroes II was not as good an actor, he actually looked just like the real guy, if you look at the photo of him on Wikipedia.
John Bach was as usual tremendous, I have long admired his performancs and think he's one of NZ's greatest ever actors. I'm enjoying him in the current creepy series This Is Not My Life. John plays baddies just as well as he plays goodies, not many actyors can do that.
There's a bit of aviation in these series too which is neat to see. A C-47 pops up often in Heroes II as does the Zero Harvard again. Well worth taking the time to watch this.
By the way I note that contrary to what I read somewhere there were not any kiwis in these two Z Force operations, though they were involved in others. So I guess John Bach was playing an Aussie again.
