Marking the passing of Flight Lieutenant Ian Johnston service # 4212809. Squadron Leader Johnston flew Lancasters out of Duxford and after the end of WW II was based at Whenuapai and demobed in 1956. He was farwelled at the Siverdale and Districts RSA on Friday, his casket was draped with the RNZAF Ensign and his uniform cap was on his casket. Personel from base Whenuapai formed a guard of honour and they slow marched the hearse away from the RSA led by a lone piper.

RIP
I never knew that Duxford had Lancasters. It was a fighter base in the Battle of Britain and then taken over by 8th Air Force jugs and stangs later. I didn't realise there were bombers there too.

Dave, his widow told me he was stationed at Duxford so was only relying on her information.

With regards to the information listed re my late father's war record (which I now have ) , I would like to clarify a few points. He joined the RNZAF on the 31/10/42 & was discharged on the 27/9/45. He served overseas for a total of 1 yr & 14 days , based at Santo & Bouganville ( 25 SQN ) . His rank on discharge was L.A.C ( Armourer / wireless ). He has never held a pilot's licence. I hope this info answers the previous questions. Murray Johnston

Huh? So he wasn't a Flight Lieutenent, wasn't a pilot and didn't fly Lancasters, and wasn't in the UK?
Is this the same man being talked about?
Being groundcrew on No. 25 Squadron is interesting in itself. I wonder if he was with the unit during their Dauntless era or the late Corsair period?
