Interesting to see the Tiger Moths at Waharoa, especially as aerial topdressing was only about 6 months old then, and considering the land around Waharoa is flat as a pancake. Then you realise that most farmers probably still spread their fertiliser by hand in those days.

ZK-AJO was of course Ossie James's aircraft. He and Arthur Baker were pioneers of aerial topdressing back in the late 1940's doing aerial topdressing on Arthur's Whitehall hills farm from Arthur's Tiger Moth ZK-APP. Arthur flew it and Ossie sat in the back with a sack of super and scooped and chucked it out onto the very hilly farm. This gave them the idea to take it further and eventually they lobbied the government for proper trials. The two men founded James Aviation.
Whitehall is between Cambridge and Matamata, and though it's closer to Cambridge and is coinsidered part of our town district we don't have a large airfield so perhaps this is why they used Waharoa? Mind you Arthur had his own farm strip where he operated his aircraft from.
ZK-ATN was apparently owned by an R.I. Graham of Paeroa at that time (or at least on 12 March 1950)

Ron Graham was the founder of Airspread based at Tauranga Airport,ATN was their first aircraft, they also very early on had bases in Taranaki and Wairarapa.Airspread was licensed for the Bay of Plenty,Coromandel and an area in the Waikato around Morrinsville and Te Aroha. They sold out to James Aviation in the early '60s so that photo is kind of significant with James and Airspread operating together at the beginning. Although Waharoa is in a flat area quite a bit of topdressing was done off of it.James's DC-3 also used it,but there was never any ag aircraft based there until the mid '80s when Fieldair based a Fletcher there, and then it was used as a base for potato spraying by Griffin Ag-air and laterly Super Air.

We should have taken a photo of the "Beast" its a Ford Lewiville, its a ex concrete mixer truck with overhauled loading gear that was dumped on us about a year ago. Its such a big thing and everytime the truck moved ie changed gear it rocked about. So funny watching my driver work it.
