If you check out the early PT6's, they have 2 small air intakes on each side of the cowls. Andy Stevenson and Bruce Peterson designed the modified air intake currently used on the Cresco.

Thanks that all makes sense. Yes I recall the earlier Cresco intakes and can understand why the newer one would be much more efficient.

I notice ROK has a 4 blade prop as opposed to the normal 3 blade fitted to most 750HP P&W's. Noise reduction perhaps??

ROK at work in Wanaka new years day. Must have some incoming aviators thinking when he calls base at 8000 ft over Hawea. "Doctor, I'm having trouble with my ears"

I used to mix it a lot with the pilots of ROK when we took the B1900 in and out of Wanaka. They would be my pick of the best of the jump ship operators that I would have worked with/around. More often than not, ROK would offer a plan over the radio that was common sense, practical and efficient. Sometimes (not often thankfully) around the country, the airline vs parachute vibe can be a battle but in my experience never in Wanaka.

Interesting, looks like a hot refuel (engine running). I wonder what the rational behind this is? It looks like a PT6, which to the best of my knowledge, isnt cycle limited.

NZONE skydiving in Queenstown do (or did, when I jumped there at Easter) hot refuels with their Crescos. Its nice to see ROK, from what I remember she's a recipient of the new-design WAW vertical stabiliser, and the orange makes a welcome change from white!

Hot refuelling seems to be pretty standard for civvy operators of turbine ag aircraft and also helicopters. I guess because turbine engines like to remain at a constant temperature and it avoids undue stress, cooling then starting up again. I'm not sure how they electrically bond (if at all) and of course you have to have faith that nothing will happen while you are not in the cockpit monitoring anything too. When all the helos come into Omaka for grape frost protection, they not only have a cue of choppers hot refuelling, but most also fill up 15 to 20, plastic lawnmower type fuel containers which they load into the back before they take off too!!

Zac - the orange ROK is a XSTOL750, which is a replacement for the former ROK which was a white Cresco. The Cresco has just been recently sold to Otago Airspread and has new rego ZK-OAS. It seems post the Fox Glacier crash, the para operators are ditching their Cresco and Fletcher meat bombers, probably because of the limitations on what they can now carry. I guess the positive is, the Ag operators can get their hands on a couple more Crescos.

Having looked after a fleet of PT6-34s, I can say that they definitely DO have cycle limited components - most of the rotating bits have cycle counts. the -34AG (Agricultural) has a really complex formula for calculating lifed items which has to take into account starts, cycles and hours (since it was common for a Cresco to do 120 landings per start!).

Cheers Bruce, I was kind of aware of that info..perhaps I should have been more specific, I guess my thought was they are trying to limit starter cycles etc.... Every PT6 I've operated has never been start limited per se.....hot section at 3600-4000hrs etc, but never start limited. Just trying to figure out the rationale...based on what I've seen :-)
