I see in the letter section of the latest Classic Wings magazine that arrived today, the excellent story of the Vildebeest carrying an entire rugby team is confirmed by one of the players - Mr. L.P. Martin of St Clair, Dunedin.
Get the issue (Vol 12, No. 2) for the full story.

There are quite a few "Rugby trip" stories in RNZAF history - I wonder whether similar things happen today? when the RNZAF gets its NH-90s they'd make a great Rugby transporter - direct to the fields if required!
RNZAF Gisborne used avengers on several occaisions for the task, but my favourite Rugby trip story is the Lauthala bay teams trip in the 1960s on a Sunderland. They hung all thier gear bags on the bomb mechanisms in the Sunderland bomb room. The racks slide out under the wings at the flick of one switch - unguarded and situated right beside the pilots knees. The pilot was not popular after he accidentally knocked the switch and sent all the teams strip out into the Pacific Ocean. ;D(See "The Golden Age of NZ flyingBoats" for the full story)
