Did anybody here know the topdressing pilot Murray Algie? He sadly lost his life on the 28th of September 1993, somewhere near Cambridge whilst topdressing.
Not too long before then, I think the previous summer, I watched him flying a fantastic demonstration over Lake Karapiro at the national powerboat champs. Murray in his Fletcher raced a Formula 1 GP boat around a circuit (at very low altitude).
He took part in this because he was friends with one of the organisers of the event I believe, and I have a feeling I was told then he actually lived here in Cambridge.
Does anypne know, was he from Cambridge? And does anyone know the exact circumstances and location of his fatal accident?
Sorry if this brings up bad memories for anyone who knew him, but I'd like to find some facts and add a small tribute to him on my website dedicated to Cambridge aviation if I can. I might include the footage Dad took of that boat vs plane race. I took several photos myself too.

Crash was in Fletcher ZK-BHU,it was very near the Tauwhare School, between Morrinsville and Cambridge, the accident report was inconclusive from memory, plane struck a hillside. He worked for SuperAir.Nice photo of him taking off in BHU in the 1990 Topdressers book.

Thanks for that. Well, that's certainly not too far from here. I should look out the local newspaper reports from then.

Hi Dave, I worked for SuperAir back and had just left when he died.
Murray was a great guy with a keen sense of humour, I normally loaded for another pilot but worked withn him several times.
I remember coming home from a job about 3 feet above lake Karapiro, up ahead there was a truck with 3 or 4 roadworkers having smoko by the lake, I still laugh when I remember their reaction to us cruising by, Murray giving a casual wave.

Murray and I learnt to fly together, he is a member of my family, his death was terrible and we are aware of what failed on his aircraft, what do you want the info for?

Welcome to the forum. Sorry for your loss.
My interest was because I have a website that is dedicated to Cambridge airmen and airwomen who served with the Air Forces, and there is a section for other Cambridge related aviation events too. I was considering the fact that I'd been told Mr Algie was from Cambridge and he sadly crashed near here that perhaps I could place a tribute page on the site. At the time i really didn't have enough information. Now, several years later. I have been informed by Alias that he was not from Cambridge after all. So I guess it doesn't really matter now. At least in some small way he is being remembered by the aviation community here.

Hi Dave, I have just read your request on Wings over New Zealand asking whether or not anyone knows Murray Algie....killed 28th September 1993.... I am his sister, Jan Hodgkinson. At the time of his death he lived in Glenview , Hamilton with his wife Raewyn and two children, Matthew 13 and Sharon 11. I would love to see any photos or information you may have regarding his flying career and in particular the display on Lake Karapiro against the Power Boat, "Radicle Rat". My family and I were there that day and it surely was a thrilling display! I know he was quite nervous just before he left us to take part in it and we were all very proud of him.... most of all our Mum and Dad who were there as well. To this day we miss him dearly and he will be in our hearts for ever. My email address is jjhodg@yahoo.co.nz or phone 078267866, mobile 021792034. I am currently living at 151 Falls Road, R.D. 2 Te Kauwhata. You are most welcome to contact me any time. Thank you, Jan Hodgkinson (nee Algie)

A long time later, my sister found the video of the Fletcher versus Power Boat race my Dad took in January 1993, and she has digitised it. I have uploaded it to YouTube. The race starts around 7 minutes into this.
