HERE WE GO LOOP DE LOOP: Members of the RNZAF Red Checkers aerobatic team perform one of the daredevil tricks that will delight people during the upcoming Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival in Dargaville. A free public flying display over the Northern Wairoa River by the daredevil Red Checkers aerobatic flying team is tipped to be one of the drawcards for an upcoming Dargaville festival.
The Red Checkers, the Air Force's precision flying team, is renowned for its formation, aerobatic formation and mirror flying displays.
Spokesman for the planned Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival, Trevor Donald, said the Checkers had this week confirmed their appearance at the event, planned for early April next year.
"They have confirmed they now have Civil Aviation clearance for aerobatics over the Northern Wairoa River on April 9," he said.
Flying CT-4E Airtrainers, complete with their small checkered stripe, the pilots are all volunteer senior flying instructors from the RNZAF Central Flying School and the Pilot Training Squadron situated at RNZAF Base Ohakea.
Organised by the Dargaville Kauri Coast Promotion Society, the festival is aiming at promoting the unique taste and talents of the district in a fun and festive atmosphere. Among dignitaries invited to the festival is Prime Minister John Key.
The Checkers will be a highlight of a day featuring food stalls in Selwyn Park, cooking competitions, waka, boat and swimming events, which includes a solo distance swim from either Pouto Point or Tangiteroria to Dargaville; a proposed hakinakina - 22 marae-based teams in a touch and league competition; and the Kumara Box train are among other attractions.
"We are also talking to the Navy about having a patrol vessel moored in the town and the Air Force to see if SAS parachutists could be dropped into the river as part of the entertainment.
The Army has also been approached. If we get sponsorship, an evening firework display from a platoon moored in the river is also being considered," said Mr Donald.
