I see from the rear cover of the latest CAA "Vector" magazine that on 30 January, the RNZAF are doing flying displays in Auckland and Hamilton:
"RNZAF Auckland Harbour Air Show 30 January 2011"
"Hamilton. RNZAF Air Display 30 January 2011"
Maybe someone has some inside track as to what the composition will be?

It'll either be the NZ Festival of Motoracing (Chris Amon) at Hampton Downs or the 4&Rotary Nats at the Drag Strip.
Bet is on Hampton Downs, not to mention would be a great venue for an airshow

The Hamilton publicity people try to claim Hampton Downs as within their city bounds to make it seem less of a boring city. Remember when the Springboks said the city was boring, quite rightly, and the info centre there put out a statement saying Hamilton had lots of great features like Hampton Downs race track (which is an hour's drive north of the city!!), Waitomo Caves (also an hour's drive south!!) and the only thing they could cling to actually in Hamilton was the Hamilton Gardens! Bloody joke. They probably consider Cambridge a central suburb.

A bit off topic Dave, 'Boring' is not as bad as what John Cleese said to an Invercargill audience about Palmy.
From Wikipedia...
Comedian John Cleese raised the ire of residents in 2006 when he described the City as the "suicide capital of New Zealand". Cleese said he had a "bloody miserable time" while there as part of his 2005 tour of New Zealand, and suggested that "if you wish to kill yourself but lack the courage to, I think a visit to Palmerston North will do the trick". Locals responded a year later by naming a hill of refuse at the local landfill "Mt Cleese".

Hilarious, and true.
One of the New Zealand comedians on one of those TV comedy festivals pointed out with global warming causing the sea to rise we're in trouble as Hamilton and Palmy are the only two inland cities!

Hilarious, and true. One of the New Zealand comedians on one of those TV comedy festivals pointed out with global warming causing the sea to rise we're in trouble as Hamilton and Palmy are the only two inland cities! Masterton is 110 metres above mean sea level (in the downtown area) and 101 metres amsl (at Hood Aerodrome), so there'd have to be a HUGE sea level rise to swamp us (and all those classic aeroplanes at Hood). Regarding the comments by John Cleese about Palmy North....I will have the original Fairfax article stashed away somewhere on a notepad document, as I formatted it (using HTML) to repost on a news discussion messageboard, complete with a rather funny cartoon that was drawn at the time (I'll probably have that cartoon stashed on a hard-drive somewhere too). Then, there was another article (which I'll also have) where John Clark aka Fred Dagg leapt to the defence of Palmy North (he's originally from there) and suggested that the council name the mountain of rubbish at their refuse transfer centre “ Mount Cleese” in retaliation. A further newspaper article a couple of days later (in the Manwatu Standard) had a photograph of the “Mount Cleese” sign in front of the garbage heap! ;D

Is Masterton considered a city though?

Auckland would be an interesting place when the water rises, lots more volcanic islands (Eden, Victoria, North Head, etc) plus the sky rise buildings will become mere buildings. It will be good for the ferry and water taxi companies. Otara will probably become the CBD.

Thanks ykato for clearing this up. Vector magazine could have done better than their inaccurate notice.
I guess it was too much to expect the RNZAF to have sufficient fuel allocation on the day to navex to Hamilton proper and return.
