This is an often-seen photo of five Vickers Vincents of No. 3 (GR) Squadron over Canterbury in 1941-42, on a dawn patrol flight (actually usually patrols were solitary so this must have been a special flight to have five plus the camera ship together). I have long loved the photo and thought it would have looked great in colour, the five machines silouetted against the morning sunrise. Boyed on by the success of and comments about the flying boat photos I recoloured this week I decided to give this shot a go today. Here is the result. Before After

Thanks. It was only when I got it up on the red background that I noticed a few bits on the edges needed tweeking, which I have done onthe original file. I think it came out ok but it looks a bit too much clash in the three colour perhaps, between the green, orange and blue. I might have another pplay with it later.

I'm really enjoying these colourisations Dave. Is it possible to get them printed if the photos aren't copyrighted or whatever, and sell them? Some of your coloured flying boat pictures would look great in a living room.

I don't know how well they would take to being made bigger, as I am often working from the size you see, but if I could get bigger scans and colour them they might come up ok. I actually think they would make nice postcards too, the size they are, but who would buiy them? Thinking about the awesome postcards Terry and Rosie make and the trouble they have had to sell them.

Yes , I agree Dave, the background looks a bit play station whereas your flying boats looked absolutely real. Maybe some photos have it others dont.

Definately some go better than others, those with more contrast and shadow are better I think, the big wide open morning sky of this one is a bit bright perhaps.

I agree , the flying boat pics looked great , whilst this one looks a little fake . I think it could be because of the composition of the original picture . There isnt much visible detail in the aircraft ( because of the shadows ) , but a lot of visible background detail . I think it should be the other way around . Still , a great picture , good effort Dave ( actually I just tried cropping the bottom quarter or so off the picture - it looks better - in my opinion )

The funny thing is these are all genuine colours, it has not been painted - this has been created using genuine photos from that area, and a genuine sunrise. But the colours clash and perhaps the land should be more golden for early morning rather than green. I will develop it when I get a chance.

Keep up with the good work Dave. We can appreciate it even if only forum members see them.
