Hi everyone,
I have an unusual and last minute request. My best mate Mike Cater who some of you have met at various Forum Meets, etc, and his Dad who's on holiday in NZ right now from Spain (he's English and ex-RAF), are wanting to go to Wings Over Wairarapa Airshow but they have made the decision to go very late in the piece, and they have realised there's just no accommodation in masterton or any neighbouring townships.
They were hoping to drive down on the Friday arriving there around 10 to 11pm (as Mike has to work that day first), and stay the Friday and Saturday night. They are very sad that they can't find anywhere that is avialable.
So I suggested that as a very long shot, I would ask on here and see if anyone happens to either know of a place that can accommodate two guys, or if maybe anyone here might have perhaps hired a place that has a spare room or whatever. Both Mike and his dad are great guys, really easy to get on with, very interesting as they have travelled the world many times, and very good humoured.
If you can help can you please text or phone Mike on 021 477 437 or email me on dave_daasnz@hotmail.com
Thanks.

Dave, have your mates tried the Ekatahuna Camping Ground......................... www.nzcamping.co.nz/camp.php?id=427They have a pair of cabins and it is very much overlooked. Alex (Aru on the Forum) and myself were in the same position a week before the last WOW and we found this place. The first night we had the whole place to ourselves. The cabin has a bunk bed, fold-out bed and a large deck in a very pleasant setting by the river and it was only about $15 each a night. There is a kitchen and shower block available on-site. Ekatahuna is about 35Km north of Masterton.

Just a note to say Mike fifnally managed to get a cabin at a camping ground in Martinborough for the Friday night, but there's nothing whatsoever in the Wairarapa on the Saturday night so they intend to drive to Wellington for that nigh, then back for the Sundayt. A long way I guess that's the price of leaing things too late. Thanks for the suggestion anyway Marcus, but they were full too.

If any one is stuck for accommodation I now have a spare room with bed available in Wellington (a friend who was coming to stay had to cancel) and I will be driving over the hill each day to the show.

Sadly, the Auckland based DC-3 has not been invited to attend the airshow. First time ever in the 23 years she has been in NZ. The other reason we are not going , is because we have not been allowed the opportunity to operate scenic flights during the airshow, which heavily subsidises the fares from AKL to Masterton. A day trip for us in not feasible, so our pax need to also factor in accomodation and costs associated with that - hence the reason to subsidise pax fares. A lot of very upset Aucklanders right now. Hope you all have a great airshow.

I guess there are now so many toys in NZ that it would be virtually impossible to display all of them within the programmed time of an airshow. When you take a look at what is based at Hood Aerodrome alone it's rather amazing, plus the RNZAF historic flight (and Spitfire) is only a short hop away across the ranges, with yet more toys only a short distance further away in Taranaki. I also gather that the days of large numbers of TVAL's Hood-based aeroplanes heading for Classic Fighters is over. When you read between the lines of various publicity releases, it would appear TVAL is planning to keep most of the toys at Hood and display them exclusively at Wings Over Wairarapa and at their own mini-airshows at Masterton, sending only a token number of aeroplanes across Cook Strait to Classic Fighters airshows in future.

I agree with kiwithrottlejockey - what is happening at Hood is Fantastic. Our DC-3 has always been at all the airshows. We totally understand budgets and what the management committee are planning. The mere word 'DC-3' would have intense international interest. And so...allowing us to operate there would provide the opportunity for Ardmore folks to fly there and stay fpr 3-4 nights. I hope we are invited back in 2 years. We are so sad to not be invited to this airshow.
