Hi everyone. 26th March 2011 is the next TVAL show. This well be in place of our usual ANZAC show. A bit earlier than usual but having ANZAC day fall on Easter weekend when some of our Aircraft will be at Omaka tends to put a spanner in the works. Also of note the show will start later and run into the evening. Bring a picnic or fish and chips and enjoy a relaxed, friendly and unique WW1 display of aircraft and vehicles. Cheers Paul

Cheers for the headsup Paul! Rach says she has ample leave hours owing, I'll talk to my boss tomorrow and see if I can do the same. I'd love to get to at least one display this season.

I'm rostered to work late-shift the weekend this is on. However, the day after this thread was posted, I applied for a day's leave on 26th March thinking it would be a real long-shot to get it off. I heard no more from crew rosters and forgot about it. However, on Wednesday arvo (yesterday), the leave form came back out of the fax machine at work and it has been approved. So....fingers crossed for the weather to behave itself at Hood!

I have the time off work to go to Dairy Flat on the Sunday, but I don't think I would be able to afford all the way to Masterton and back, and then up to Dairy Flat the next day! Not to mention being exhausted.
Maybe during the next airshow season I'll manage to go to a Masterton show and not have it rained or blown out.

Maybe during the next airshow season I'll manage to go to a Masterton show and not have it rained or blown out. The Anzac airshow in April last year had absolutely perfect weather and it was a magic flying display. My brother Steve was over from Brisbane staying at my sister's place in Lower Hutt and he caught the train over. I picked him up from Solway railway station (along with Errol who was also on the train) and when we got to Hood, my brother took a look at the lineup of WWI fighters along the fenceline and his jaw dropped. He showed the many photographs he took (over a thousand) to his mates back in Brisbane and they were blown away that such a comprehensive airworthy WWI collection existed. Fingers crossed for Saturday!

Vintage flying machines comingBy PIERS FULLER - Wairarapa News | 3:45PM - Wednesday, 23 March 2011THE last big airshow to be hosted in Wairarapa may have been rained out, but punters will get a chance to get their aviation fix at an upcoming evening event to be held this weekend at Hood Aerodrome.
The Vintage Aviator is putting on a WWI Evening Airshow on Saturday, March 26 showing off its amazing array of vintage aircraft.
The collection is recognised as one of the best of its kind in the world.
All the original and reproduction aircraft are airworthy and weather permitting they will take to the skies giving demonstrations and performing mock air battles.
It won't just be the WWI biplanes and triplanes up in the air.
The big WWII Chance Vought FG-1D Corsair will also be wowing audiences with its thunderous roar as it flies past.
Another huge attraction for this event is the air force's display team, the RNZAF Red Checkers, putting on one of their highly-skilled acrobatic performances.
Organiser Sara Randle of The Vintage Aviator says they are hoping for more favourable conditions than many recent events at Hood have experienced.
"We're trying to get a break from the wind that has hampered us operating some of the aircraft at past airshows."
They had to to cancel their last two air shows because of poor weather and this is the reason they have elected to go for an evening event this time around.
The winds tend to be lighter at the end of the day so fingers crossed for Saturday's show.
Ms Randle says they try to put on more intimate events than the big marquee air shows such as Warbirds Over Wanaka and Wings Over Wairarapa.
She says the visitors can get a chance to get close to the aircraft and even talk to the pilots.
There will be viewing bleachers and full commentary set up for the evening.
They plan to fly three original WWI aircraft, the Bristol F2.B Fighter with the oldest Rolls Royce aero engine still flying in the world today; the BE.2f the only one of its kind in the world and the AVRO 504k operating an original spinning rotary engine.
Also flying will be everyone's airshow favourite, the FE.2B a big 1915 era, 50ft wingspan bomber, with the propeller at the rear of the fuselage and the pilot and gunner at the front.
Airshow crowds are always amazed to see the gunner standing up out of the aircraft in firing position.
None of the pilots and gunners wear parachutes or seat belts.
The WWI troop carriers, buses, tanks and staff cars will be offering free vintage vehicle rides to the children from 3pm to 4.30pm. The air show runs from 4.30pm till 7pm.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/wairarapa-news/4800998/Vintage-flying-machines-coming

I almost hate to ask but, did it go ahead? Yes is sure did. Not many people. The weather was ok at Masterton , just a few showers right at the end. Great displays and awesome aircraft. Here are a couple of my shots

I agree with PP. Only a couple of hundred people turned up. There were no new debutants at this show - just the usual suspects (Brisfit, FE2, BE2 x 2, SE5a X 3, 504K, Tripe, Nieuport, D7, Dr1 x 3, Pfalz, Albatross, Stampe, a couple of Tigers, the FG-1 and the Red Checkers). The weather put a damper on photography. Ground to air shots were complicated by the cloud, gloom and occasional rain. As if there wasn't enough cloud... I may have photoshopped this a bit... Cheers, Brett

Thanks for the photos.
Like Zac I too was nervous to ask did it go ahead.
I was going to come up from Chc but metservice was saying that NZMS was not going to be the best and after having been washed out at Wings over Wairarapa in Jan it was a case of once bitten twice shy!!
Any more photos happily viewed!!

It was nice to meet you Brett. Yep it was a hard time photography wise. Did not get too many good shots but had a great day. So lucky in NZ to get close to the action Its a Stampe SV4 dude you lost your leather headgear and an SE5 in trouble

"...the ususal suspects..." OMG!!!! When I was attending NZ airshows with my Dad every season as a kid (1970s-1982) the 'usual suspects' were machines such as C150, 152, 172, 180, Victa Airtourers, Tiger Moth, Bolkow, Fletchers, Agwagons, Hiller UH-12, Pitts Special (for real stunts) and RNZAF representation. May we never become complacent or blase! :-)
