www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/4662206/Rare-vintage-planes-fly-in-for-Mandeville-event/A German-made wartime training plane, owned by a Swedish aviation enthusiast, will be among the attractions at this weekend's Mandeville fly-in. Croydon Aviation Company director and fly-in co-ordinator Maeva Smith said the Klemm 35D aircraft would be among vintage aircraft touching down at the Mandeville airfield for two days of aviation indulgence. Hakan Wiyklander, known to all as Hawkeye, had shipped his 81-year-old aircraft from Sweden and was spending a couple of months flying around New Zealand. The aircraft was rare and it would be a treat to have it at the fly-in, Mrs Smith said. Other vintage aircraft expected this weekend at the small southern grass airfield, near Gore, includes three or four Tiger Moths, Chipmunks, a Yak and the usual Piper Cubs. The Tiger Moths are part of a contingent on a jaunt around the South Island, taking in the Mandeville fly-in before heading north to Blenheim for the annual Tiger Moth rally, on February 26. There will be vintage action on the ground as well as in the air, including a traction engine race down the runway. The steam-powered engines reached speeds of up to 16kmh, Mrs Smith said.

How long is the runway at Mandeville then? At 16kmh let's hope it's not too long!

Not long enough! They'll never get airborne at that speed...

And if they did I wouldnt want to do the air to air refuelling as a bunker of coal wouldnt keep a traction engine airborne for long. Think of the drag factor. Mind you anything is possible from the deep South as Gore is home to a large lawn mower racing club.

Do the mowers run on coal too.

I reckon this could be a project for Al: find a powerplant powerful enough to make a traction engine fly. A couple of P & W F-100's should do the trick.
