Hi gents
Thought some of you may like to see this, pretty rare to see these shots.
I have had them for some time and posted them out to a couple of people for personal ref as at some time they were going to be used for a book and didnt want them plastered around. But I have now seen them posted all over the show so figured they were too nice to not let you guys see.
They were originally scanned at high res by my friend Wayne who has done extensive 489 research, these are from an ex 489 pilot(sorry cant remember his name for now).
Enjoy

Ahh, absolutely awesome Anthony ! - Real gems, I didn't think shots like these were still around, particuarly of our Sqn.'s, and especially 489... - It appears they are sporting the later designed 'Christmas-tree'' rocket-rails too...- Many thanks, I'm most appreciative !

Superb photographs Anthony. Although a somewhat belated reply I was interested in your comment that your friend Wayne had or was doing extensive research about 489 (NZ) Squadron. Do you have access to photographs of other 489 Squadron aircraft, such as the Beauforts, Blenheims, Hampdens and Beaufighters which could be posted up onto the forum. Is your friend Wayne intending to publish his research - the information I have read to date of some of the experiences of the 489 pilots and crews make fascinating reading.
My immediate interest in 489 (NZ) Squadron aircraft is in the conversion of their Hampdens to T.B.1's that the squadron received with the larger bomb bay doors to cater for carrying the 18 inch torpedos carrived. I am presently building a 1/48 FM kit of the Hampden and wishing to modify it to representa T.B.1 in 489 Squadron colours - most probably AN127 XA-Y.
Some refernce books say the bomb bay doors were not closed but left partially opened when carrying a torpedo and others clearly state the bomb doors and the rear bomb bay frame was lowered to cater for the bottom half section of the larger doors of the bomb bay to be completely closed enclosing the torpedo carried. This appears to be confirmed in a photograph of the Canadian preserved example of the Hampden T.B.1 (which I believe was extensively damaged on December 26, by the weight of a large snow fall on its wings). This displays the larger one part doors as against the two part folding doors of the standard B.1. version. My understanding is that the latter is correct with the larger bomb doors - thus the modifed T.B.1 (Torpedo Bomber Mark 1) version of the Hampden. I believe 162 Hampdens from Bomber Command squadrons which had been phased out of front line service were modified to the T.B.1 version in Canada and issued to Coast Command Squadrons such as 489 Squadron before being in turn replaced later by the Beuafighter TX10. If anyone has access to photographs, drawings or even access to AP1579B Vol.1 which is the AP issued I believe by the MAP detailing the modifications, I would appreciate it if I could get access.

Welcome to the forum lyncha, I'm afraid the photo is not showing up. I'd be keen to see it if you can post it please.

Allan Lynch (lyncha) has kindly sent the photo to me to post here. It's a beauty! His father was a No. 489 (NZ) Squadron pilot and this photo comes from Allan's father's navigator, Paul Gifford. Thanks Allan.

In case you cannot make it out, the serial number of P6-A is RF838.
It looks like the P6 codes have been repainted over top of older codes, like the Mossie is second-hand from another unit?

This one is RF 849 "J" Enjoy I just noticed that this Mossie (RF849) has an even stronger Kiwi connection in that it became NZ2386 which then became ZK-BCX when surplussed and was eventually scrapped at Palmerston North. There is a good chance that some components still survive.
