Especially appropriate painting as one of the Spitfires is that of our own Al Deere, and Colin Grey also served in that Squadron

You forgot the real hero of the BoB Hurricane Mk1, RAF serial R4118, Squadron code UP-W, at the PFA Flying for Fun Rally at Kemble Airfield, Gloucestershire, England. This aircraft flew 49 combat sorties, destroyed 3 enemy aircraft and damaged 2 others. It carries its original markings. Photographed by Adrian Pingstone on August 20th 2006 and released to the public domain.

Colin Gray and Al Deere flew with No.54 Squadron during the Battle. KL-B was flown by Al Deere.

Cheers, I knew they both flew with 54 during the BoB. Any idea on the tail numbers for Deere's a/c and the rego/numbers for Grays?

Interesting to read they have excavated the 'Kiwi 1' Spitfire and are rebuilding it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Deere#Battle_of_Britain31August 1940, Al Deerre was coming in to land when at 100 feet, he was blown upside down by a bomb blast. The Spitfire impacted the runway and, despite the horrific mess, Al Deere suffered no more than cuts and bruises.

Colin Gray's Spitfire 1 was coded KL-T and serialled P6893. The link below may be of help if you want colour schemes and codes etc... www.modelaces.com/148_scale_model/spitfire_mk1_gray.php#topAl Deere's 'Kiwi' Spitfire is quite well known, probably due to the large number of photos available. In his book 'Nine Lives', Al deere talks about his 'Kiwi' scheme. From memory I think he had so many incidents that he came to the conclusion that the symbol was unlucky and so later did not have it applied to subsequent aircraft he flew. P9398 KL-B is available in a wide range of kitsets and diecast models.

Calum, I also think that the Hawker Hurricane is the 'forgotten hero' of the Battle of France and Battle of Britain.

Al Deere flew 3 "Kiwis", and although over the last 50 or 60 years or so 2 are often quoted as P9398 and N3183, these have been proven to be incorrect. The correct serials for Al's Kiwis are:
Kiwi I, N3180 Kiwi II, P9390 Kiwi III, R6981
Calum, if you want reference photos for modelling, PM me and I'll scan what I have for you.
Cheers,
Tim.

I recently received an email regarding the identity of the painter of the 54 Squadron Picture used on the first post in this thread. The painting is called 'Hard Day's Eve', and it was painted by Piotr Gorka, a Polish artist whose website celebrates Polish aviation. The description under the painting says: "The Hard Day's Eve" / "Wieczor Przed Ciezkim Dniem" Piotr Gorka 1995; Oil on canvas 43 x 28 in Three Spitfire Mk. I fighters of No. 54 Squadron on their way back to Hornchurch in September of 1940. During the Battle of Britain, five Polish pilots fought within this RAF unit. Hope this is of assistance.
