I photographed this yesterday, and I think this might be the only aircraft in NZ that wears the white fern roundel. What struck me as a little odd is the tip seems to point backwards towards the tail. is this correct? I would have thought they all pointed forward towards the nose, like the RNZAF kiwis do?

Looking at the Ventura decals sheet for these roundels www.venturapublications.com/store/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=284 they all seem to tip to the right rather than the left as the one in your picture does, I'm not sure if the fern was always the same way & they could be rotated to be one way or the other but they don't seem to be done a mirror images for opposite sides so I'm guessing they were all one way. Steve.

Yes they were always tipped to the right, and top forward on the wings, just out of interest are they new? I've never noticed them before!

It was repainted recently, within the past year I think.

Was it not a silver fern?

The fern began as white, and around a year later they adapted it to sulver as people said it looked like the white feather of cowardice.

The fern leaf was specified as being “wholly within the red disc and at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal axis thereof, with the butt of the fern leaf in the lower left hand portion of the red disc, as viewed by an observer" www.thescale.info/news/publish/rnzaf-roundels.shtml

They are not the only people to have got it wrong, if you look at this Herc photo below you can see it's also the wrong way. As for the real NZ 6001/6010 with it correctly positioned as in Barnseys post,. NZ 6001 could have only worn the fern leaf for a few months before it was renumbered NZ 6010 in August 1959

Well spotted Nev! I wonder how long that Hercules roundel lasted like that?
