This I don't know but it's quite possible they wanted to keep them in a standard scheme to start off with.
I do know the Corsairs and other aircraft in the Pacific were constantly undergoing touch ups as their paint wore off - mainly to the roundels which were reapplied often while the rest of the paintwork faded away. The damage to the paint from the coral dust meant they needed to be repainted so they could be seen. Some however were allowed to fade off so much the original star underneath would ghost through the RNZAF roundels. No. 21 Squadron few several like that.
