Some say the RAF's Phantoms were the worst variants ever built David D Worst maybe only that of all the variants they were the slowest, heaviest and thirstiest. I haven't researched this of course so might need to verify if this was in fact true.

I hasten to add that the British Phantoms were not terrible aircraft as such, but their performance was somewhat inferior in certain respects when compared to the mass-produced American versions with J-79 engines. The reasons for fitting the more powerful but bulkier RR Speys in the British aircraft were somewhat compelling, but their greater diameter and the larger air intakes required tended to increase aerodynamic drag, and the ultimately very truncated production orders meant that these Phantoms were, in the event and after most of the order had been cancelled, very expensive aircraft to purchase. Just thought I should add this brief postscript to explain that my last post was not intended to be a crazed anti-F-4 tirade, and to soften my earlier criticism somewhat before some other forumite decides to sort me out! They were better than the J-79 engine versions in a few aspects (worse in others), and had a better missile in Skyflash.
