Yes, I saw that this morning.
To be fair to the RNZAF, it sounds to me like there are a few issues between the Cpl Carson's girlfriend and his family which have created some misunderstandings.
Anyway, the RNZAF and Govt have launched an inquiry to look into how the matter was handled, so I'm not sure what the family hoped to achieve by going to the media?

Shame that there is more bad press for the air force, nothing has been achieved by going to the media as you say corsair.

Shame that there is more bad press for the air force, nothing has been achieved by going to the media as you say corsair. This isn't the first time its been in the media I dont think - that is what likely led to the inquiry in the first place - the anniversary seems to have given it a bump (and we all know contriversary sells papers). I think the family are fully justified in their position - they are the official next of kin -No mention of the length or relationship - how long is "long enough" for a relationship to have been going on justify overriding the priority over the family ?... and why could both parties not attend the updates on the court of inquiry - let along be told they were happening. Likely the inquiry will find that there are several people needing a kick up the bum only to be slapped with a wet bus ticket instead . Sounds like pretty shameful behaviour, and probably for the entire NZDF not just the air force in particular.

As far as next of kin goes, it all depends on who the service member nominates as next of kin, alternate next of kin and casualty next of kin.
Next of kin is pretty self explanatory, alternate is just that, in case the next of kin can not be contacted.
Casualty next of kin is used if you don't want your next of kin told as the the first point of contact in case of your death or injury. For example you may not want the air force rocking up to your frail old mum and telling her, instead preferring your brother be told and him being the one to tell the rest of the family. Or alternatively you may want your partner to be the one who is told. I have no idea what the story was in this case.

You have legal rights to relationship property etc after 2 years... The GF could be claiming with this as a basis if they had a relationship greater than this....

Sad situation either way, and not good publicity for the RNZAF. Hopefully it can be all sorted out to the satisfaction of all involved. I can't believe that it is a year ago today that this accident happened.
