The following article I have taken from the Auckland Mirror magazine. It was published in 1940 and written by John S.W. Stannage. John Stannage, as you may know, was a writer, aviation correspondent, broadcaster and radio operator on aircraft, including flying with Kingsford Smith across the Tasman in the Southern Cross in 1935. I have tried hard to find out more about him. He was obviously in NZ during the war - was he a Kiwi? Also, despite approaching several museums and archives I have not been able to ascertain when he died and whether he had any children, etc. So i don't know the copyright status on this piece. He's obviously long dead or he'd be well over 100 now, and the magazine is long defunct. So hopefully it's ok to have here. Anyway, this fascinating piece on Hobsonville at the beginning of the war was a big spread but I removed the photos as they didn't print well off the microfilm. I hope you'll enjoy reading this, and any info on the author is most welcome. Be aware there's a couple of overlaps in the scans, and the last scan is the same columns as the two right columns as the scan above. You'll work it out. Sorry the text has come out small, but feel free to save and blow it up if need be.
