i remember once when Air New Zealand were operating A320s out of HLZ and them spending nearly an hour down at the 36 threshold waiting for it to clear. It didnt, and the pilot radioed up to say that the vis had dropped to such a level, that he couldnt taxi back to the apron. We got a call via the tower to go down and escort the aircraft back. The vis was seriously down to about 5 metres and with the aircraft being white,it didnt pop out the fog til i was pretty much right in front of it! Was a very slow backtrack down the runway to the apron. Good old fieldays FOG.

has absolutely nothing to do with the above but may be of interest? or maybe not? anyway air nz 737 Departing Ham Friday Night - lost viz of the 737 lights half way down the runway due the amount of water being thrown up behind it.

I remember back in the days when Air Nelson operated Saabs 340s... a good foggy morning would sometimes see crews "go out for a look". One such crew loaded up, started and taxied for RWY36... sat there for a while then taxied up the other end for a look... then returned back down to RWY36... this went on for about an hour when it started to clear. The crew then piped up and requested a return back to the apron for more fuel!! The weather cleared enough for the ATR, a different SF34, and a couple of B1900s to depart... but when the original Saab made it back to the holding point full of gas the fog had moved back in!! He again sat on the Threshhold for about 30 mins before returning to the apron and cancelling the flight! Pax had sat on board for just over twice the HN - WN flight time, but went nowhere!!!
