Hi guys, I am just up loading a very large number of pictures from The National Air and Space Museums Udver Hazy facility and Dulles airport, Washington DC. Due to a lack of space at their museum in the Mall, a lot of the aeroplanes are kept here. Last year Classic Wings had a story regarding their storage and restoration facilities. They have recently built a HUGE restoration facility at Dulles which is able to be viewed from the Museum. Here are a couple of pictures...as you can see very new. There is a Helldriver, Sikorsky float plane and that Japanese aeroplane similar to a 262.

Fantastic, thanks heaps for the photos and do post more. I'm always interested to see behind the scenes at any museum, and NASM behind the scenes magazine stories are always very interesting.

Strictly speaking it is not NZ aviation History which is what this thread is about but who cares. I remember when I visited NASM back in 1977 with a group of like minded aviation enthusiasts and was very impressed. We also visited the Silver Hills facility and I remember seeing Enola Gay and was amassed it was still in existence. After that we went to the USAF museum in Dayton Ohio and seeing the Valkyrie bomber. I very much like seeing overseas preservation's so I guess the only answer is Dave, Can we please have an Overseas Preservation/Museum Thread?

I'm not convinced we need a whole new board for overseas preservation. We have the General Board for discussion of overseas issues, and there's also already an overseas sub-board on the General Board. There is also the Aviation Photography Board where this post would also be equally as well suited. I might just move it there. For every new board I create it's another new board to monitor and maintain and so I am not too keen to make more work for myself and Craig and Don. In fact I'd prefer to close that sub-board for overseas news and discussion and have it all in the General Board to be honest.
I welcome any thoughts here of course. But in the meantime I'll shift this to Aviation Photography. An interesting looking place Ian, what was the Japanese plane? Was it a twin jet?

Ki-201 Karyu/KaryĆ» I think is the tech name.....had to look it up...looks very similar to a 262.
It is huge Dave!
There are a lot of interesting people to talk to, I had a guided tour of the SR71 by a guy who used to fly it.
There were also a group of Black American airline pilots who were telling people about their careers. They were very interesting and represented their airlines well in their uniforms.

Great photos. Thanks for posting them, and for making me feel bad because I probably won't ever get to see this place in the flesh! ;D

No need to apologise Richard, it was a good thought and I did give it some consideration but I don't think it's really needed.
As for finding things on the forum I have realised this week that the far better Google search engine at the bottom o the forum has mysteriously disappeared I checked some other forums and it has disappeared from all of Proboards. I wonder if they had a falling out with Google. It's a pity as it was much better for finding threads then their built in one. However going to actual google is still a better option. They seem to have this whole forum taped pretty well.
